It seems appropriate also to mention creditable service when those who
performed it are often disinclined to speak of, or even recall the events of
the war years. Fascinating books have been written by and about combat
crewmen who dodged the bullets, flew through the flak and gave first aid to
wounded crewmates. Considerably fewer books have been written by and about
those who spliced hydraulic lines in the freezing rain at two o'clock in the
morning. Or those who hauled the ordnance, or kept the payroll, or cooked
the food, or unloaded the supplies and so on.
None of them are forgotten.
