M/Sgt. John Nellis

Every Web Page must have some reason for being; some cause in the mind of the author for its having been written. The reason for my interest in the 453rd Bomb Group is that my father, M/Sgt. John W. Nellis (12044343) was the Crew Chief of the Male Call. It is my wish to honor him and all the men of the Group for the admirable job they did in stopping armed and ruthless Oppression from overspreading Europe and beyond.

It seems appropriate also to mention creditable service when those who performed it are often disinclined to speak of, or even recall the events of the war years. Fascinating books have been written by and about combat crewmen who dodged the bullets, flew through the flak and gave first aid to wounded crewmates. Considerably fewer books have been written by and about those who spliced hydraulic lines in the freezing rain at two o'clock in the morning. Or those who hauled the ordnance, or kept the payroll, or cooked the food, or unloaded the supplies and so on.

None of them are forgotten.
