Captain Beyond Radio Extravaganza (Part 2) hit the waves!!!!
The Captain Beyond Radio Extravaganza (Part 2) was broadcasted yesterday on WSUM (Madison Student Radio, Wisconsin), conducted by Myopic Void supremo Ryan Patrick Meehan. It lasted over three hours and included some revelation material, as a embryonic version of "Sweet Dreams" as well as a unique surviving live version of "Thounsand Days Of Yesterdays (Time Since Come And Gone)", both recorded at the Bikershaw Festival back in 1972. In addition to this, the listeners had the chance to hear the new incarnation of Captain Beyond, performing at the Club Hustler 15.10.99 ("Distant Sun" and "Mesmerization Eclipse") and F.B.I. Club 18.12.99 ("Dancing Madly Backwards/Armworth/Myopic Void", "Fantasy" and "Starglow Energy"). Further hi-lites were the early eightes Rhino band "Mad Dancer" as well as some material of Rod Evans (with "The Maze" and "MI5"), Jimi Interval (with "Prowler"), Willy Daffern (with "ZoomlenZ" and "Truk") and some songs from the Captain Beyond Tribute CD, performed by Locomotive Breath, Zello, Abramis Brama and Orchid Leaves.

From the Captain Beyond Management : News on Captain Beyond´s activities and Tribute album.
"Some cool stuff is happening in the Captain Beyond camp. As you all know, the group has been recording their demo and mixdown took place last weekend on 75% of the music. Project completion is slated for mid-January. This demo is a sample taste of the wealth of product that lies within this band and will be used to land the best record deal. Shopping the labels is an on-going affair, but the labels don't often sign new deals in December but rather start fresh in January. Once a record deal is landed, then an album recording phase will commence. So, you'll all have to hang in there, it's not a quick process. But, I'm sure the wait will be well worth it. The new songs are really great! It's been a long, long time since I've heard music this good (yes, I'm biased, but I have a good ear, too). Gigs next weekend as has been posted: Club Hustler and the F.B.I. A very special band will be opening for Captain Beyond at the F.B.I. The great "Sammy Demo Band". Mark Samanski, DJ, WHTQ, 96.5 FM is in this band and they are really good, and Mark is quite a guy. He's been a loyal supporter of Captain Beyond and has introduced the band to audiences in person at a few gigs, not to mention his comments over the air (Thanks, Mark!!). Mark has been plugging the show and he gives tickets away to the F.B.I. show during his afternoon broadcasts via radio station contests. You know the bit... the 10th caller, etc. This will be a great show and many are looking forward to it! The shows are local, yes, and this is what the guys want right now. With the writing and recording project in full swing, going on the road right now is not the best move. Plus, unfortunately, there have been some family illnesses-so you can't just split. The band's calendar is planned to be quite full next year, and on New Year's Eve, make a toast or a silent toast to wish/make the Year 2000 Captain Beyond's. They deserve it. A European tour is highly likely within the first 6 months of 2000, and 6-8 week tours in the U.S. plus festivals in the spring and summer should enable many of you to catch a show (or two). We will keep you informed (in advance).
Yes, Tribute Album is out. I have a copy. Very good, interesting interpretations to listen to. Some stay true to the sound of Captain Beyond and some take the liberty of artistic license (a good way to feature their own signature styles and sound). A thank you goes to all the bands on the CD, job well done! Special thanks to Hartmut Kreckel and Ina Friebe and their wonderful "Starglow Energy" (Hartmut, I know you love that song!!), and Willy Daffern and ZoomlenZ' "Sweet Dreams" is really, really a great bonus track. Willy's voice is great! Locomotive Breath - what can I say, Janne Stark and members, you've outdone yourselves! Janne, love that "tube screamer" (thanks for letting Rhino use it in Sweden!). A nice treat for all! Record Heaven did a nice job, thank you very much. Get your copy folks."

Captain Beyond Tribute album finally released!
The Captain Beyond Tribute album "Thousand Days Of Yesterdays - A Tribute To Captain Beyond" finally arrived yesterday. Lots of great bands performing Captain Beyond´s first album and selected cuts from the other two albums. It can be ordered through Record Heaven or through this website. This is the christmas CD, that a lot of you out there have probably been waiting for and it finally got release in time-just before christmas.
Authorized by Captain Beyond, with additional liner notes by Bobby Caldwell and Rhino Reinhardt. Record Heaven announces: "In 1972, Captain Beyond released their classic first album. The band featured ex Deep Purple singer Rod Evans, Rhino and Lee Dorman from Iron Butterfly and Bobby Caldwell from the Johnny Winter Band. A shortlived lineup, but they created one of the top hard rock albums of all times."
Listening to the lyrics, it becomes evident, what lyrical damage the japanes staff (you did not deserve your payment cheque for this sloppy job! HK) from Poly*** Records had done, when reissueing the first two Captain Beyond albums: some bands took these fake lyrics for real and actually sang these!!! One by one the CD features the following songs in the following running order (no matter what the CD inlay may suggest):
*Dancing Madly Backwards - Pentagram (US): Overall a very good rework of the song in a nineties metal sound. Listen
*Armworth - Rise And Shine (SWE): This one follows in a more grunge guitar sound. And very high end vocals.
*Myopic Void - Standarte (ITA): The first band that fell deeply into the japanese lyric trap: they sing "I´m so humble/common on your grave, on your grave". Once for all: it is "I no longer saw colours, only grey, only grey..."!!!. Otherwise the rework of the only italian band on this CD is quite good.
*Mesmerization Eclipse - Lotus (SWE) w/ Brian Robertson: This was actually performed at Swedenrock (Lotus played at the tent stage just before your favourite band had hit the main festival stage). Brian Robertson ads his signature solos the this very heavy version of the song.
*Raging River Of Fear - Flower Kings (SWE): As the CD booklet already hints, this band are probably the only one the CD that don´t care about Captain Beyond. And it is audible indeed, this version has almost nothing in common with the original; in fact, IMHO it should not be on this CD, as it´s not a tribute at all.
*Frozen Over - The Quill (SWE): A quite modern heavy version.
*Thousand Days Of Yesterdays - Five Fifteen (FIN): A more pop approach by this band from Finland, very well arranged, with different singers and a guest appearance of Hawkwind´s Nik Turner.
*I Can't Feel Nothing (Part 1) - Locomotive Breath (SWE): Janne Stark and his orchestra pay tibute to Captain B and stick close to the original. Well worked out.
*As The Moon Speaks - Astral Lady - As The Moon Speaks (Return) - Zello (SWE): These very intresting versions are contrapuntal to the renditions of "I Can´t Feel Nothing": Zello has no guitar, but the Keyboards and violin know how to make up for this. Very well arranged and performed.
*I Can't Feel Nothing (Part 2) - Locomotive Breath (SWE): This closes the first album taking up on Part 1.
BONUS TRACKS:
*Starglow Energy - Orchid Leaves (GER): Never heared of them... next!
*Sweet Dreams - ZoomlenZ w/ Willy Daffern (US): Willy Daffern´s new band ZoomlenZ give a new dimention to this song. Willy´s vocals will leave you sufficiently breathless, he adds a new dimention to his song, sings with a different kind of distance. And what a wah solo from Jeff! The band plays in their style as on their CD, see below.
*Förtrollande Förmörkelse - (Mesmerization Eclipse with Swedish Lyrics) - Abramis Brama (SWE): Musically a much more traditional version than Lotus, with a jazzy middle section.
*Dansar Galet Bakåt - (Dancing Madly Backwards with Swedish Lyrics) - Qoph (SWE): A jazz type approach to this song, very different to Pentagram indeed, very good.

Captain Beyond in the studio recording a demo.
Captain Beyond has been in the studio to record a demo for prospective record companies.
Jimi Interval: "I´ve been in the studio with the boys recording our demo tape. It sounds KILLER!!! There´s something for everyone to enjoy..."
Jeff "Count" Artabasy: "The new stuff rocks and has a lot of cool time signatures like the CAPTAIN BEYOND records of long ago! We (Bobby, Ryno, Count, Jimi and Dan) would like to thank everyone for there support and interest, that being said the new members of CB are not attempting to fill the shoes of any of the original members as someone put it, nor do we want to, our playing stands on it's own merit as you will soon see. After all it is the year 2000 and things do change. We just hope that when you do finally hear the new record you will enjoy it."

ZoomlenZ (feat. Willy Daffern) release debut CD "far off target".
ZoomlenZ, the band comprised by Ex-Captain Beyond singer Willy Daffern and Ex-Wild Dogs Jeff Horton (g) and Tom Moller (dr) plus Terry Fletcher (bass) release debut mini CD "far off target", containing 5 songs and one instrumental. The overall impression is a very professional production with high instrumental and vocal hability. Due to Willie D.´s signature voice, unique phrasing and melody lines, the vocals will be the focus for a lot of people. So, to make a long story short, Willie D. (as he now calls himself) has lost nothing from his vocal habilities, even though he stopped performing for a very long period. Compared to Dawn Explosion... of course it sounds more modern, which is not a surprise after 22 years in between both albums. It´s a bit more straight from the drum department and more modern grooving and less melodic from the 4-string camp that the Captain´s album, mainly mid tempo, though it has no straight rocksongs like "Fantasy" or "Do Or Die"; "it could be described as distant sounding, taking some reference to "Sweet Dreams", "Midnight Memories or even Pipedream´s "Rosalyn". Over all it has its own identidy and similarities to Captain Beyond are only audible in the vocals. It´s not "instant impact" music, it takes times to get into it. It has no instant hooklines for fast consumtion purposes (Don´t the record companies always tell you that it is forbidden to do this these days?). The tracks one by one:
1. Carolina: a modern groove mid tempo rock n roll with a distorted voice passage, good to listen in the car perhaps.
2. Sea of Sorrow: here comes a "Midnight Memories" like ballad with a modern 90´s rythm section. A short talk box guitar solo included. It´s over 7 min. long (Don´t the record companies always tell you that it is forbidden to do this these days?).
3. Angel Heart: another modern groove mid tempo rocker with a great guitar solo from Jeff, lasting for about 1 min. (Don´t the record companies always...?).
4. Orion (alien blues): Starts with a drum loop, that seems to last for the whole song and gives the vocal, reminiscent of "Sweet Dreams", "Icarus" and "Breath Of Fire (Part 2: Alone In The Cosmos)", a totally different dimention.
5. Far Off Target: a instrumental reminds a bit of Rush, perhaps Dixie Dregs, very well worked out and arranged with sometimes 4 guitar tracks audible at the same time.
6. Ghost Radio: this also could be described as distant sounding, taking some reference to "Sweet Dreams" and "Midnight Memories", as far as the vocals are concerned.
Overall a very recommendable affair that leaves to look forward for a complete ZoomlenZ CD, planned earlier next year.

Captain Beyond in the studio and live.
Captain Beyond is focusing right now on the their writing and recording project with recording sessions booked for this weekend and next. And, future dates in the studio will be planned as well. There is a club gig booked on the 15th to keep the sticks, picks, keys, and cords warmed up, performance wise, while they are in the midst of the recording schedules. This show will be enjoyed by an intimate gathering of about 400 people. When the details are worked out, I'll let you know where they are playing. As far as other gig dates, right now, as mentioned, the focus is on recording but its not to say an occasional gig won't pop up here an there. After their new album is in the can and is on the market then please watch for a Y2K Tour! I would venture to say a U.S., and European tour is very likely early next year.

Captain Beyond Radio Extravaganza.
A four hour long lasting Captain Beyond Radio Extravaganza was broadcasted on the Internet on WSUM (Madison Student Radio) this morning at 1.00 GMT, conducted by Ryan Patrick Meehan. It contained music of Captain Beyond (of course) and music by the various past and present members. Highlights were the Rod Evans single and interviews with one time singer Robb Hanshaw and present lead vocalist Jimi Interval, which gave hint of Jimi´s great attitude and whose song "Reflections Of A Dream" by one of his former bands "Prowler" showed what a potential Jimi has to offer to the new Captain Beyond.

News on the Swedish Captain Beyond Tribute album.
-ZoomlenZ, the band fronted by none other than Willy Daffern, decided on to re-record "Sweet Dreams" for the Tribute album. It seems to have the most potential for a "ZoomlenZ-treatment", with some heavy guitar, electronic drums and some new killer vocal parts! (Thanks to Jeff Marks Horton - ZoomlenZ Guitarist)

Small Tibutes to Captain Beyond by King´s X.
-King´s X Guitarist Doug commented in the early nineties: "...there was a band called Captain Beyond, and their first album is a great, great record. The lyric "Dancing madly backwards round-about" from "Send a Message" on the "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" is a small tribute to Captain Beyond!!!"
-Monster Magnet: once somebody told me: "I don´t like Monster Magnet, because they are a rip-off! They ripped off Captain Beyond for the song "Twin Earth": it´s a straight rip-off of the Captain Beyond song "Mesmerization Eclipse"!!!" Well, I checked it out and draw the conclusion, that "Twin Earth" would not be close enough to "Mesmerization Eclipse" to sue the Monsters for songwriting royalties or something. But comparing both songs reveal that Captain Beyond had class, still have class and probably will always have class...

Report on Captain Beyond live @ DJB Benefit.
I had the honor to see Captain Beyond last night in Orlando and it was really kick ass! They played the Benefit for Danny Joe Brown Show and they sounded excellent! They only had about 30 minutes of stage time, but they used it very well. They started with "Voyages Of Past Travellers", and then they went into "Distant Sun", which they did very well. Jim, the lead singer really did a great job, the man has a really good voice! Then they played "Dancing Madly Backwards/Armworth/Myopic Void", "Sufficiently Breathless"; "Starglow Energy" and ended up with "Fantasy". Rhino was in top form, playing his heart and making his guitar sound really great, and Bobby was doing a really good job on the skins.

Captain Beyond live @ the Sweden Rock Festival!
Tha band played their debut gig in Sölvesborg at the Sweden Rock festival to a audience of 17.500 to a very good reception. Lots of Captain Beyond afficionados in the audience, including yours truly, were impressed by the new line-up of the band.
The band was announced (in swedish) and subsequently hit the stage. The 17.500 paying audience at first was very curious to see the new Captain Beyond and for 99% it was the first time to come taste the band. New frontman Jimi Interval broke the ice, finding instantaneously the line of communication with the audience, while a bit of "Voyages Of Past Travellers" was blasted through the P.A. System. Then Jeff "Count" Artabasy and Ryno (as he now calls himself) started that cromatic riff to "Distant Sun" and the crowd kept getting into the groove. Ryno played a solo like on the 1973/`77 gigs. This was followed by the Dancing Madly Backwards/Armworth/Myopic Void" section, which the crowd seemed to know best and was taken very well into the next century by the new band. Keyboarder Dan Frye was adding great solos and backing to "Dancing...". Jimi managed to walk the thin line between sticking to the original vocal melody lines of the songs and adding his personal note. His voice can be described as much more in the Willy Daffern than in the Rod Evans range, with a dramatic edge added. Next was "Breath Of Fire (Part One)". Sadly, leaving out the second part of that song, the band went straight into "Thousand Days Of Yesterdays (Intro)/Frozen Over" with some rynoisms in the middle section over Bobby Caldwell´s fantastic drumming. Bobby´s drumming was superb, he hasn´t missed a thing since the seventies and why the world is taking about Ian Paice and Ginger Baker and not about Bobby Calödwell can only be explained with bad luck and market imperfections. The man´s drumming skills are such, that he probably could do a interview while playing his well thought and accentuated patterns. The band had rearranged "Sufficiently Breatless" with drums by Bobby and percussion by Jimi. A lyrical change in the fade out section of the song towards "...something left to live for us", sung by the whole band has also been made: this gives a hint of the new spirit of this band, that´s really looking forward to remain long term and achieve new goals instead of relying on past glories. Bobby and Ryno had a very good choice in picking the new people for the band, who are all very straight group musicians, lacking any stupid rock star attitude. "Everything Is A Circle" is performed next with a great organ solo from Dan and giving Jimi a good chance to add his signature voice to the song. "Ranging River Of Fear" has the crowd moving along to this mid-tempo rocker. It was followed by "Fantasy", that great song from the "Dawn Explosion" album. Sadly, this song is interrupted before the climax part, as Count´s amp blew up. Jimi manages quite well to keep the fire burning until the crew replaces the amp and the band continues with the climax part of the song: "... sitting here, center stage" and the magic instantanealy returns. It´s a song about mega-stardom, the thing that Captain Beyond should have achieved in the seventies, but didn´t. Dan leads the audience into "Starglow Energy", the song that gives the answer, why Captain Beyond´s music has a presence rarely achieved. Bobby adds his accentuated drumming giving the song more edge than the recorded version. Ryno´s tasteful solo leaves the audience breathless and during the "... it started to tke me higher" bit the intensity of the band´s performance reaches the peak level. During the end section of the song "... don´t you turn your back on me...", the audience knows what´s going on and calls for more: that band goes into "Thousand Days Of Yesterdays (Time Since Come And Gone)", with a extented middle section, containing great piano and organ solos from Dan. Sadly "I Can´t Feel Nothing" had to be dropped due to time restrictions and the show running late. The band is introduced by Bobby and performs "Mesmerization Eclipse", which is very well executed and goes down very well, the song seems also to be well known too, it was covered already. The crowd demands a encore and is treated to a encore: a newly arranged version of the instrumental "Oblivion", with some more Ryno soloing and a solo from Dan, which reveals his influences of Keith Emerson, and a hot bass and drum section. The band walks off stage and leaves the audience waiting for them to return for them to return to Sweden this fall.

Captain Beyond on air!
"Hi Folks... just to let you know... Captain Beyond has long been a featured band on our show "The Dream Clinic" on WMNF 88.5fm in Tampa, Florida. Not only their legit LP´s, but also their live stuff, that is around. I have compiled the best sounding of this stuff and used it on air... much to the delight of the audience... most of it from Arlington, Texas 1973 show. One of the cool things was a song... not on any LP... something about a poem regarding war... very hippie like... very much a timepiece. My partner Walter Storch talked to Bobby Caldwell at a show in St. Pete this weekend... informed him of the audience response to CB music... it´s phenomenal!"

Captain Beyond announced on air!!!
A Florida radio station, WHTQ, 96.5 on FM, was at the rehearsal on February 7th and they announced the reforming on the radio the next day. Now, the radio station will be playing CB music a lot. At the rehearsal, they started with songs from the first album, and also played some songs from Sufficiently Breathless and Dawn Explosion. It sounded very good. Everyone there loved it. It was a private party so to speak, but everyone there hasn't seen the guys play together yet, so in a sense it was all new!!
The plans are to do a festival in Sweden in June, perhaps some gigs in Germany and then to return to the US to record a album and do a tour.
