Create your own home page
You don't have to read through the whole of The Home Page Helper to make your own page. Here are a few fast and easy ways to do it:
First
Print out this page. It might come handy during your work.![]()
Creating the page
There are two main steps you'll have to go through. First you create a document and store it in your own computer, then you upload it to the web.1. Generator
Go to http://home.online.no/~frnordbe/hph/generator.html and just follow the instructions there.
2. Word processor
I do not recommend this method! The HTML-encoding from word processors (Microsoft Word in particular) are awful! However it does work, it's simple, and you don't need any special programs.
Modern word processors like ClarisWorks and Microsoft Word let you store a document in HTML format. Just write your page the way you want it. When you save it, choose "index.html" as the file name and "HTML", "WWW-document" or something like that as the format.
3. Myrmidon
This page was originally created with a really cute program called Myrmidon. Unfortunately it's only available for Macintosh. If you use Windows, you can just forget this alternative, I'm afraid.
If you do use a Macintos computer, you'll find Myrmidon at http://www.terrymorse.com/. Mysrmidon isn't free, biut you can get a trial version that only works 25 times (it should be enough for creating just one page). Just like the word processors, Myrmidon creates a lot of superfluous encoding on your page. After I made this page, I actually cut the size down to less than a half by editing the encoding. On the other hand, it's incredibly fast and easy to do.
This is how you do it:
4. HTML-programs
You probably already have some HTML-program. There is one that comes free with the Internet Explorer, another one that is included in the Netscape Communicator collection (together with Netscape Navigator) and Claris has thrown their Claris Home Page in with the ClarisWorks package. They all are quite similar and easy to use. Just remember to store the document as "index.html" and preferably in its own folder to make it easier to find later.

Uploading
Now it's time to "upload" your page to the web.First you'll have to register with a (free) web server. I'll recommend FortuneCity (http://www2.fortunecity.com/downtown/index.cgi) for your first site. Their upload function is the simplest and best I've found. Just like the other free servers, FortuneCity does put an advertisement banner on top of your page. There is no way to avoid that if you want to have your web site for free, I'm afraid.
After registering with FortuneCity, it's time to upload your page. Go back to the FortuneCity main page, choose "Update your home" (you'll have to enter your user name and password) and then "Use File Manager". In the "Update files" section you click on the first of the "Browse..." buttons. Then you seach through your hard disk to find your page. If you've used Myrmidon, there are a couple of other files that should also be uploaded. Use the other "Browse..." buttons to choose more than one document. (You'll also have to create a directory (click on "Create dierctory") called "gifs" for the graphic files Myrmidon made. Then you'll have to load all the files in the "gifs" folder on your own hard disk into tjis directory.)

Improving the site
Now, it's time to relax and enjoy, or maybe it's a good idea to visit The Home Page Helper (http://home.online.no/~frnordbe/hph) to learn how to make a real killer site!Good luck!

Some words about me
![]() |
My name is Frank Nordberg and I live in Bodø, a small town in Northern Norway. (Just look at the map to the left. The arrow ended up a little bit too far south, though.) I works partly with Internet (creating homepages for those who haven't got time themselves), partly as a musician. I've got too many web sites to count, but the most important ones are: The Home Page Helper (http://home.online.no/~frnordbe/hph) and Musica Viva (http://home.online.no/~frnordbe/MV). You find my main page at http://home.online.no/~frnordbe/eng.html. |
This page was created with ClarisWorks, converted with Myrmidon and finally edited with Cinnamon WebMaster Suite. All the work was done on a ten years old Macintosh computer.
