Wednesday June 16, 2:40 PM Boyzone star Stephen Gately's admission that he is gay will not harm the band's sales, say chart watchers. They point to the continued worldwide success of stars like Elton John and George Michael after their homosexuality was disclosed.Gately announced that he is in love with his Dutch boyfriend Eloy de Jong, a former member of boy band Caught In The Act.
In an interview in The Sun, he said: "I'm gay and I have had gay romances, but now - for the first time in my life - I am in a relationship with someone I love."
Gennaro Castaldo, of the HMV retail chain, said: "It won't affect sales at all.
"There's no way the fans are going to desert them over this and if anything it will get all the fans behind Boyzone.
"They are a band at the peak of their powers and this is certainly not going to displace them whatsoever.
"Now this is out in the open he can relax and be himself and I'm sure the fans will be able to relate to that. It's a very positive thing for the band."
Editor of Smash Hits John McKie agreed that sales and popularity would not be affected.
"Ronan (Keating from Boyzone) got married, losing his single status, and went on to win three Smash hits awards last year. I think Stephen will still be immensely popular."

Boyzone singer Ronan Keating has unveiled the line-up for an all-star charity concert in Hyde Park to help fund research into breast cancer - the disease that killed his mother last year. The singer and his model wife Yvonne have been closely involved in organising the Wicked Women concert, to be held on Saturday 24 July, where Ronan will duet with Baby Spice, Emma Bunton, making her solo singing debut away from the group.
Other performers at what is the last concert to be announced in this summer's Route Of Kings season, supported by the Evening Standard, will include Martine McCutcheon, Jane McDonald, Mark Morrison, Beverley Knight, the Honeyz, Dina Carroll, Gabrielle, Connor Reeves, Republica and Errol Brown.
More will be named in due course and the late additions are tipped to include Geri Halliwell and George Michael, both keen supporters of the research charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer, which will benefit from the show. All the singers will be backed by an all-star house band under the musical directorship of Midge Ure.
Speaking of his role in organising the show, Keating said today: "Breast cancer is a cause very close to my heart, which is why I was one of the first people to agree to participate in this concert. I will be performing with some well-known friends of mine, but to find out who they are, you'll have to come along." Tickets for the concert will go on sale tomorrow and details can be found in an advertisement in tomorrow's Evening Standard. The Route of Kings series, expected to attract 130,000 people to Hyde Park over three weekends next month, already includes three concerts by Sir Cliff Richard, with guests Elaine Paige and Bjorn Again, two by Simply Red and one by Bryan Adams, supported by Space.
The shows will raise much-needed funds for the ailing Royal Parks - seeking ¢G70 million for repairs and restoration - and will maintain Hyde Park's tradition of public entertainment dating back to The Rolling Stones' famous free concert in the Sixties.
