Meet "Fresh Step".![]() They're cheesy. They're amusing. They're over the top. They're FAKE. Last month David Letterman featured them on his show and left everyone wondering, "Are they REAL?" With lyrics like "Girl, you're so fresh, you're so freaky fresh" and dance moves that were obviously exaggerated imitations of the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, could they really expect to be taken seriously? A few weeks later they showed up on MTV's Total Request, plugging a new song, video and, well, themselves! They claimed to have a song on the soundtrack of a new movie called "Talk To The Hand" starring James Van Der Beek and Sarah Michelle Gellar. When they sang a cappella the only possible reaction was to drop your jaw and cover your ears. They were off key, not blending and just plain BAD. This was the last we expected to see of them. |
Then, lo and behold, several nights later they were BACK on The Late Show. Letterman didn't act too happy to see them, but he held up their cd (which was obviously fake) and introduced them anyway. The song they performed this time was more of a ballad, but that didn't stop them from dancing. The lyrics were even cheesier than the original song - "You're freaky fresher than a fresh work of art!" ![]() ![]() This left reason for some serious investigation. Caitlin over at backstreet.net began to look into it, and in very little time discovered that they are a satirical boy band that The Late Show producers had put together as a joke. It was a lot easier to take Fresh Step seriously as a JOKE than an actual boy band. It reminds us of Ben Stiller's "Backstreet Boyzzz" skit from the MTV VMA. It's funny, unless you start to take it as a direct slam against your favorite group.

Not long afterwards, we were looking through J-14 magazine and noticed two familiar faces in the "Scene Everywhere" section. It didn't take us that long to remember where we'd seen them. It was Fresh Steppers "Jamie" and "Brad". ![]() They were posing with Danielle Fishel (from Boy Meets World) and a bunch of other guys. The caption said that they were the cast of the Broadway production of "Footloose". Odd as it might seem, we were suprised at how decent looking they were when not making fools out of themselves. So, it appears that at least two of the members of Fresh Step really can sing and dance when they're not trying to act like they can't. Will we be seeing more of these posers? Who knows. Many people are saying that Letterman had better give it a rest before he damages his chances of ever getting the BSB or *NSYNC on his show again. (Here's an article from the New York Daily News about it.) pictures from Backstreet.net and The Official Fresh Step Page UPDATE! It looks as though everyone's starting to get in on the joke. Fresh Step homepages are popping up all over the Internet! Are these people serious or are they kidding around? Judge for yourself. "Fresh Step Makes Me Proud To Be A Young Man" This page is run by a male "fan". Pretty amusing. A Fresh Step Fan Site Ok, I REALLY don't get this girl. She's gotta be kidding. (Includes a "poster" for Talk To The Hand) FreshStepper's fan page The site features a sappy poem and a "Congratulations On The Grammy!" banner. Ahem...WHAT Grammy??? Another Fresh Step Fan Site Includes up-close pictures from the official site and "press reviews" (can we say PHONY?). A Fresh Step Puzzle Oh WOW. It REALLY works, too. And possibly the cheesiest thing said so far: "Putting the puzzle together helps a true fan to really appreciate these talented Artists." *gag us* The thing we found interesting is that all the sites link back to each other. That pretty much proves that all these so-called "fan pages" are probably made by the same person/group of people. We'll update you when we have more info.
