Saxon Interviews

Interview with Nigel Glockler:
1) What's your fave Saxon song?
I haven't really got a fave song - obviously I have a fave off each album but to narrow it down to just one is impossible! However, "Unleash" is my fave album - I really felt that we all performed exceptionally well on that and the vibe in the studio was brill! - and I loved playing the title track live - it was just manic!

2) Where does your nickname 'The Red Baron' comes from?
Ha Ha! I guess that comes from the fact that one of my favourite films is "The Blue Max" - I can't stop watching it! I don't know if you know what it's about - WW1 flying - and I'm fascinated about Baron Von Richtofen - hence that nickname! I've been called a few nicknames in my time - the most recent band-wise was "The Engine" courtesy of Biff!

3) Do you prefer live or studio work?
Sorry to be difficult, but I love both - the creativity in the studio, seeing the birth of a song and hearing all the different parts gel into it's final format is great fun - hard work but great and very fulfilling. Then playing live gives you such a buzz that you only get from being in front of an audience. Every gig is so unique.

4) What other bands do you like?
I'm really into Type O Negative, Tiamat and that sort of Gothic type of metal at the moment but I still listen to my faves like Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Yngwie Malmsteen, Rush, Saga, Toto - all sorts of stuff really.
5) Who is your fav drummer?
Simon Phillips, Terry Bozzio, Vinny Colaiuta.

6) What is the reason you left Saxon?
I ripped a muscle between my neck and shoulder - like tearing a piece of raw steak in half - and it bloody well hurt! I think it happened in Brazil and when we went to Sweden shortly afterwards, it kept tearing because I hadn't seen my doctor as I didn't know what it was, but the gigs were very painful - I thought I had just strained my shoulder but I was told what I had done and that I should not play for a few months to let it heal.
Saxon went to the U.S. without me and then I did a couple of gigs in England when they returned which were agony so I had to make the decision to leave in order to let my muscle repair. In the meantime, I've been writing loads of stuff here at home so I've been keeping really busy. Leaving the band hasn't caused any animosity - we all keep in touch a lot and we'll always be really good mates.

7) Could you tell us something about the drums you use?
I use Premier drums, sticks, heads, Paiste cymbals, Remo roto-toms and Spoxe, and a DW remote hat. Bass drums are 24", 2x8" roto toms, 10", 12",13", 16", 18" toms, 20" gong drum and various snare drums.

One other thing - thanks to every one for all your support - and you WILL hear me next year - I'm writing a couple of albums at this very moment! In the words of a certain actor - "I'LL BE BACK"!!!!!!!!!

All the best, Nigel Glockler, November 1999.
