The History

Metallica formed in 1981 with singer-Guitarist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, Ron McGrovney(later to be replaced by Cliff Burton), and lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, who had taken over for earliar member Lloyd Grant. Mustaine was fired in 1983(because of a drinking problem)and replaced by Kirk Hammett,a former member of the band Exodus. Metallica's first album Kill 'Em All, attracted thousands of head-banging fans. The follow-up releases Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets were greeted with enthusiasm by the worlds heavy metal fans. This enabled the band to jam with fellow "metalheads" on the enormous Monsters of Rock Tour which was show cased by a free concert in Moscow that was attended by 500,000 Soviet metal fans.

Tragedy struck Metallica on Sept. 27, 1986 when the bands bus hit a patch of black ice and skided into a ditch, killing bassist Cliff Burton. After a long and hard break they began looking for a replacement for Cliff. The spot was filled with
Flotsam and Jetsam member Jason Newsted. This all lead to the bands 1988 album And Justice for All, which went platinum and earned a Grammy Award nomination. The release of Justice coincided with Metallicas return to its musical roots: the groundbreaking metal stylings of the 1970s rock giants Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. This resolve became the cornerstone for the 1991 release, Metallica black album. The new record sold 2.2 million copies in its first week. This earned them Grammys in both 1990 and 1991 and sent the band into heavy metal superstardom.

After the crap cooled down metallica decided to take a long and much needed break from the spotlight. But after five years without a studio release Metallica was back and with it came a new image and sound. With the release of load came mixed feelings about the band, some said they sold out but others(like me)raved the new sound and thought of metallica as gods. Load was followed up by Reload which include an even newer sound. Just recently metallica released Garage Inc. which included all of there covers.
