The Secrets Trilogy: Part 1 - Constant Fear

Chapter 3

Alexis was so impressed with the quality of Abigail’s work that she had been asked to take on more responsibilities as time went on. Alexis had asked her to start accompanying her to interviews and she had been asked to do research on different occasions and Abigail thrived on her new responsibilities. This week, they were preparing for an interview with Orlando’s biggest success story. Abigail spent three days preparing research material on a group called The Backstreet Boys. She had never really heard of them before, so she didn’t think too much about being present for the interview. Her friends were envious and kept telling her how lucky she was, although she had to admit that they seemed pretty talented and they weren’t bad looking either, but she couldn’t understand what all the fascination was about. Abigail was just thankful that she was being given the opportunity to take on more responsibilities and learn. She hoped that given time, she would have enough experience to move into a higher position. For the first time in years, Abigail had a goal to work towards; Her goal, nobody else's.

The day of the interview, they spent three hours waiting in a room full of at least fifty other reports and members of the media. Abigail had been able to determine that the group was releasing their third US album and fourth international album and it seemed like the whole world wanted the opportunity to report the news first. They waited patiently and Abigail took every step possible to ensure that Alexis was comfortable. She had come to learn that Alexis was extremely tolerant and hardly ever complained, but that didn’t stop Abigail from going above and beyond.

When they were finally escorted into a dimly lit room, Abigail and Alexis were asked to take their seats before the boys entered the room. Abigail watched as the five men entered and got comfortable on the oversized couch. She was so wrapped up in her work that she never noticed the look she received from the oldest member. Although after a short while, Abigail did notice how good-looking they were and she had to work hard to remain focused. She was never the type of person to let good-looking men intimidate her, and she wasn’t going to let that change now.

They were only allotted fifteen minutes with the group, so as usual, Alexis didn’t waste any time. Alexis started by introducing herself and Abigail. That was when Abigail promptly started the tape recorder and watched Alexis intently as she conducted a professional interview with the group. Abigail was actually quite impressed with the group of five men that were seated in front of them. Not only were they extremely down to earth, but they also seemed to approve of the light and humorous direction the interview had taken. Alexis had always told Abigail that it was unacceptable to introduce humor into an interview, so she was surprised at the unexpected turn that the interview had taken.

Once their fifteen minutes had expired, each member of the group stood up and thanked both Alexis and Abigail for taking time out of their busy schedules to sit down and talk to them. It was at that exact moment when Abigail noticed the member named Kevin Richardson. He was a few inches taller than her and he had long black hair with the most beautiful green eyes she had ever seen. He thanked Abigail and shook her hand with a firm grip that proved he was confident and held her gaze for a few extra seconds. She now had some idea what her friends Sarah and Julia saw in him. Kevin was an extremely good-looking man and she felt he could easily fall back on a career as a model if their music fell through.

Those green eyes haunted Abigail for the rest of the day.

“Earth to Kevin!” Brian said as yet another reporter left the room.

“Uh, yeah, what Brian?” Kevin replied, annoyed that his daydream had been interrupted once again.

“What planet were you on during that interview. You’re lucky she didn’t ask you any questions directly.” Brian said, surprised by Kevin’s sudden disinterest.

“I was just thinking, that’s all,” Kevin said as he put a water bottle to his mouth and took a sip, hoping Brian would drop the subject. There was no way he was willing to admit his thoughts were drifting back to a reporter. They’d all think he lost his mind.

“Sure whatever you say Kev. Do you think you could keep your mind on the interviews for the next couple of hours?” Brian asked.

“What’s the big deal? So what if I don’t say anything throughout one interview. Nick gets away with it all the time.” Kevin said in an annoyed tone.

“We need you to stay focused Kevin. You know what happens when we let Nick talk.” AJ said as he ducked and laughed when the pillow that was intended for him, hit Howie in the face.

“Come on guys. We only have five more interviews left. Do you think we can stay focused for just a little bit longer?” Brian said.

“Chill Brian. Did you and Kevin trade places today or something?” Nick said.

“No! I would just like to get out of here without making fools of ourselves, that’s all.” Brian said.
