The Secrets Trilogy: Part 1 - Constant Fear

Chapter 32

“Where do you think you’re going?” Frank asked as Kevin got up to move.

“Cool your jets. I’m just going to the washroom.” Kevin said. Fortunately, Frank hadn’t figured out that Kevin had his cell phone with him. He been debating about calling Carlos for the last hour and finally decided it was time to let them know what was going on. Kevin locked the door and brought Carlos’s number up on speed dial and hit send. Carlos answered the phone quickly. “I don’t have a lot of time Carlos. I’m still on the bus and I’m calling you from the washroom.” Kevin said in a whisper.

“Jesus Christ Kevin! Are you all right? Everyone’s freaking out here.” Carlos said.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Kevin replied.

“Are we correct to assume that Frank is involved in this somehow?” Carlos asked.

“Yeah. He’s driving the bus, but he’s not the smartest guy in the world. I’ve been riding up front with him so I know exactly where we are. We just got onto the I75 and we’re headed to Florida. He wants me to bring him to Abigail.” Kevin explained as quickly and quietly as possible.

“It’s going to take at least twelve hours to get there. Is this guy crazy?” Carlos said.

“I think we all ready know the answer to that question.” Kevin replied.

“Just sit tight Kevin. The police are doing everything they can and I’ll be sure to pass this information on to them.” Carlos said.

“Thanks Carlos. How are the others handling this?” Kevin asked.

“They’re pretty freaked out. Brian’s been freaking, AJ and Nick have barely said two words and Howie’s taken charge. Say, they’re trying to get in touch with Abigail. Do you have the number handy where we can reach her?” Carlos asked.

“Don’t bother, she doesn’t care anyways.” Kevin said sadly.

“That’s bullshit, and you know it Kevin.” Carlos said.

“Look I have to go. I’ll try to call again in a couple of hours if I can.”  Kevin said quickly before he ended the call. He didn’t feel it necessary to tell Carlos where Abigail was, since she had made it quite clear that she wanted him out of her life. He didn’t want to burden her more than he all ready had. As Kevin exited the washroom and made sure his phone was well hidden, he realized that Abigail’s wish might just come true if Frank felt the need to get violent.

“I’ve got some good news guys.” Carlos said as he entered the room that everyone had congregated to. As soon as he had everyone’s attention, he began speaking. “I just got a call from Kevin. He was able to hide in the washroom on the bus for a few minutes and make the call. Unfortunately, Frank is behind this and from what Kevin can tell, they are on their way to Florida. Frank wants Kevin to take him to Abigail, so I’ve passed this information on to the police and they are confident that they’ll be able to stop Frank.” Carlos explained.

“So he’s not hurt at all?” Brian asked.

“No. Frank hasn’t become violent at all.” Carlos replied, praying that it stayed that way.

“How did he sound?” Brian asked, worried about his cousin’s mental state.

“He actually sounded pretty good. What ever is happening between him and Abigail has been taking a toll on him, and I think this is keeping his mind off of it.” Carlos remarked.

“Does anyone know what happened in Florida? I didn’t expect to see him back so soon.” Howie asked.

“He hasn’t said anything to me, but he did say something strange when I asked him how to contact Abigail. He said something about Abigail not caring. That just doesn’t make sense.” Carlos said, shaking his head in confusion.

“We have to find a way to get in touch with her before the media gets their hands on this story. We can’t let her find out that way.” Brian said.

“The officer in charge is trying to find out where she is. As soon as he has the information, he’ll pass it on.” Carlos said.

“I can’t take this sitting around anymore and I don’t think I’ll be able to get any sleep either. Who’s up for a game of basketball?” Nick asked. The other three guys agreed it might help keep their minds off of Kevin.

Abigail was in talking with Dr. Steep about a disturbing dream she just had, when an uneasy feeling overcame her. She had been feeling extremely guilty about sending Kevin away, especially after Dr. Steep pointed out that Kevin could be in danger as long as Frank was free. She pushed the uneasiness aside, forcing herself to believe she was bringing the feeling on herself.

Dr. Steep noticed Abigail’s expression change. He was trying to talk to her about Frank’s escape when she appeared to zone out. “What is it Abigail? You appear to be troubled by something.” Dr. Steep inquired.

Abigail desperately wanted to tell Dr. Steep about the uneasiness she suddenly felt, but that would mean she would have to drop the act that she didn’t care about Kevin anymore. “I’m just feeling uneasy all of a sudden.” Abigail replied.

“Care to talk about what is making you feel uneasy?” Dr. Steep questioned.

“I’m getting the feeling that Kevin is in trouble.” Abigail admitted. If she ignored her gut instinct and something actually happened to Kevin, she would never be able to forgive herself.

“Do you want to give him a call?” Dr. Steep asked, feeling that this was a step in the right direction.

“I’m not sure he wants to talk to me after what I said to him.” Abigail said.

“Abigail, he still loves you very much. I think he would love to hear from you.” Dr. Steep said, trying to avoid mentioning Kevin’s feelings related to her asking him to leave.

“Can I use your phone?” Abigail asked.

“Do you want me to give you some privacy?” Dr. Steep asked.

“No, please stay.” Abigail said as she dialed Kevin’s cell phone number. She waited and waited and felt her fear grow when all she got was Kevin’s voicemail. “He’s not answering.” Abigail said while she hung up the phone and tried Carlos’s cell phone. He would know where Kevin was.

Carlos watched the guys play basketball. They were all quickly running out of steam and needed to get some sleep, but he understood their apprehension. They probably wouldn’t get a lot of sleep anyways. He was startled out of his thoughts when his cell phone rang. He answered it quickly, hoping it was either Kevin or someone with some good news.

“Carlos, it’s Abigail. Do you know where Kevin is? I know it’s late, but he doesn’t normally have his cell phone turned off.” Abigail said, without taking the time to say hello.

“Oh hi Abigail. How are you feeling?” Carlos stalled. He hadn’t anticipated a call from her and he had no idea how to break the news to her. Instead he got Brian’s attention and signaled him to come over.

“Carlos, where’s Kevin?” Abigail asked, ignoring his question.

“Hold on a second.” Carlos said. He covered the phone and said to Brian. “I’ve got Abigail on the line. Do you want to tell her?”

Brian reluctantly took the phone from Carlos and said, “Hi, Abigail. It’s Brian.”

“Brian, where’s Kevin? All I want to do is talk to Kevin and everyone keeps stalling.” Abigail said in a raised voice.

“Um, Kevin’s not here right now.” Brian said.

“Please tell me he’s all right.” Abigail pleaded.

“Did you hear something Abigail?” Brian asked, wondering how Abigail was so sure that something was wrong.

“No, I just got an uneasy feeling a short while ago.” Abigail replied.

‘Shit, these two are like soul mates.’ Brian said to himself. Brian took a deep breath and finally told Abigail the bad news. “Um, Abigail. I hate to be the one to tell you this, but Kevin has been kidnapped by Frank.”

“Oh my god! I should have never told him to leave.” Abigail interrupted, feeling a sense of remorse.

The comment Kevin made to Carlos about Abigail not caring started to make a little more sense. “Abigail, this is not your fault.” Brian tried to reassure her.

“Is he all right?” Abigail asked.

“Carlos spoke to him a short while ago and yes he is fine. Kevin was able to give us some idea where Frank and him were, so the police are working hard to find him.” Brian said, intentionally leaving out the part that Frank wanted Kevin to bring Abigail to him.

“If you see or talk to him Brian, please tell him that I love him.” Abigail said.

“I most certainly will. Why don’t you give me the number where we can reach you? We’ll call as soon as we hear anything.” Brian said.

“I’ll let you talk to Dr. Steep. I don’t know what the number is here. Please call me the second you hear anything.” Abigail said as she passed the telephone off to Dr. Steep. She sat down and started to cry while Dr. Steep was talking to Brian. She felt responsible for getting Kevin involved in the nightmare she called her life.

As soon as Dr. Steep was off the phone, he brought Abigail back to her room where he gave her a mild sedative to help her sleep. He had asked Brian to relay any information on to him and he would see to it that it got passed onto Abigail in a timely fashion. He had no idea how Abigail was going to react to this latest news. She had become extremely vulnerable over the past twenty-four hours and he felt it was best to shield her from what was happening.
