Kevin
rolled over and stretched as he woke up after a couple hours of
sleep. He could tell from his position in his bunk that the bus
was still moving. He looked at his watch and cursed when he
realized he had slept for almost six hours. That meant they were
more than half way to Florida. He thought for sure that the
police would have been able to locate them by now. His thoughts
drifted to Abigail, but he quickly pushed them aside. Now was
not the time to worry about what she had said. He needed to stay
focused and ensure that Frank didn’t get anywhere near
Abigail.
He
slowly emerged from his bunk and made his way to the front of
the bus. Frank was looking rough around the edges from driving
throughout night. Kevin would have at least one advantage over
Frank, he thought to himself. His mind was clearer than it had
been in weeks.
“Glad
to see you’re finally awake Kevin. I was starting to worry.”
Frank said, without even looking back at Kevin.
Kevin
simply sat down without responding. He wanted to get a feel for
where they were. He had meant to make another call to Carlos a
lot earlier. Once he confirmed that they were still traveling
south on I75, he made his way towards the washroom.
“I
wouldn’t think about making another call if I were you
Kevin.” Frank said as Kevin neared the washroom.
“What
are you talking about?” Kevin asked, deciding to play dumb.
“I
have some people working for me Kevin and I know you made a
phone call to your bodyguard last night. That wasn’t a very
smart move.” Frank said.
“You’re
talking about me not making a smart move. You’re the one that
should have made sure that I couldn’t make any calls in the
first place. Now they know where we are headed and what you’re
up to.” Kevin said.
“I’m
still one step ahead of you Kevin. I’ve got friends in high
places and I know exactly where you have Alison hidden. You
didn’t think you could actually keep her hidden from me did
you Kevin.” Frank said.
“I’m
confident that security is strong at the facility. So you may
know where she is, but you won’t be able to get anywhere near
her.” Kevin said.
“I’ve
fucked up Alison’s life once. Don’t underestimate me Kevin.
I’ll be able to do it again.” Frank said.
Kevin
took a seat and went over everything that Frank had said. Should
he take the chance and call Carlos to warn him that Frank knew
where Abigail was. No, he decided it was best to not contact
anyone. He didn’t want to put Abigail’s life or his own in
further risk. He felt confident that as soon as they got word
that he had been kidnapped that security would have been
increased even more at the treatment facility. He just hoped
that by withholding information on how to contact Abigail
hadn’t put her life in any more risk. If he could turn back
time, he would have told Carlos where Abigail was.

Throughout
the night, there had been several developments. As planned,
Frank had walked right into their trap. Frank had haphazardly
contacted an old friend Peter, who now worked for the police in
Florida. He had asked this friend to scan for any calls made
from a particular cell phone. So of course, Kevin’s call to
Carlos had been detected. Peter had informed Frank of the phone
call, but he also informed the detective in charge of the case.
All states and cities along the I75 were notified of the
situation and given strict orders not to leak any details.
As
soon as they knew that Frank trusted Peter, they decided to set
a trap. They would let Peter tell Frank that he had picked up
where Abigail was being hidden while scanning the police
frequencies. So far it appeared that Frank was taking the bait.
If and when he arrived there, the police would be ready to
apprehend him.
The
other guys had all decided to take an early morning flight to
Florida because they all wanted to be there for Abigail and
Kevin when this whole mess was over.
********************
When
Abigail woke up the following morning, her mind felt clearer
than it had in several weeks. She knew exactly what she needed
to do. She needed to try and help Kevin and make sure that he
knew she didn’t mean anything that she said over the past
couple of days. She couldn’t imagine how discouraged Kevin
must be feeling being held by Frank, all while he thought that
she didn’t care about him anymore.
Before
she had the opportunity to get dressed and find Dr. Steep, he
was there in her room. “How are you feeling this morning?”
Dr. Steep asked.
“Do
you have any news about Kevin?” Abigail asked.
“A
lot has happened throughout the night. Why don’t you finish
getting ready and meet me in my office.” Dr. Steep said.
“Please,
just tell me if Kevin’s ok.” Abigail said before Dr. Steep
left the room.
“As
far as we know, yes Kevin is still unharmed.” Dr. Steep
replied.
Abigail
got dressed as quickly as she could and rushed down to Dr.
Steep’s office. She
was anxious to find out what had happened throughout the night.
She rushed into his office and said, “I’m here. I need to
know what is going on with Kevin.”
“I
take it this means you didn’t mean what you said the other
day.” Dr. Steep pressed. Before he proceeded he needed to know
what Abigail had been thinking.
“I
feel awful for doing that. I was convinced I was preventing
Kevin from getting hurt. If I’d only let him stay, maybe he
wouldn’t be in harm.” Abigail responded.
“Abigail,
we’ll have to work on this later. You need to understand that
you are not at fault. You have to understand that no matter
where Kevin was, Frank was going to find him.” Dr. Steep
explained.
“I
know. It’s just difficult for me to deal with this considering
I was the one that told Kevin to leave.” Abigail said.
“I
realize that, and once this whole ordeal is over we’ll deal
with that. For now, I need to brief you on what will be
happening here this afternoon.” Dr. Steep said.
“Before
we start, I’d like to ask if I could be there when Kevin is
found? I need him to know that I’m sorry and that I still love
him.” Abigail said.
“Let
me explain what is happening before we discuss that. Do you
recall an old friend of Frank’s named Peter Winston?” Dr.
Steep asked.
“No,
the name doesn’t ring a bell.” Abigail replied.
“Frank
has been in touch with Peter, who Frank claims he used to be
friends with. Peter now works for the Florida State Police and
has been keeping the detective apprised of all contact. At
first, Frank asked Peter to scan for any contact from Kevin’s
cell phone. Unfortunately, the call that Kevin made to Carlos
was picked up and Frank is aware that the call was made. But
Peter has helped to set up a trap and Frank is walking right
into it. They have given Frank the information that he wants and
once he arrives at the destination, the police will be waiting
for him.” Dr. Steep explained.
“What
is his destination?” Abigail asked.
“I’m
telling you this, because I feel it’s important for you to
know the whole truth. The reason Frank kidnapped Kevin was so he
could find you. He wants Kevin to lead him to you. So that is
what they’re doing.” Dr. Steed replied.
“Are
they crazy? I don’t want him anywhere near here.” Abigail
yelled.
“You
have no need to worry Abigail. There are a large number of
police officers on site all ready and more scheduled to arrive
within the hour. They will ensure that he gets no where near you
and they’ll do their best to apprehend Frank without Kevin
being injured.” Dr. Steep said.
“I
don’t know if I like this idea. What if Kevin gets hurt?”
Abigail asked.
“They
are doing everything to try and prevent that.” Dr. Steep tried
to assure Abigail.
“When
is this all supposed to be happening?” Abigail asked.
“They
have estimated that they are approximately four or five hours
from here.” Dr. Steep replied.
“So
I’ll be able to see Kevin once he’s safe?” Abigail asked.
“Of
course. We’ll bring him right in to see you. But it is
important that you remain in your room Abigail and it will be
heavily guarded. We obviously don’t want to put your life in
any more risk.” Dr. Steep said.
Abigail
wasn’t sure what to think. She just prayed for Kevin’s safe
return. She would never be able to forgive herself if something
happened to Kevin.
