Abigail
spent the remainder of the day in Kevin’s room where he would
drift in and out of consciousness. He was still very weak and in
quite a bit of pain, so it was better for him to sleep. People
would come and go and she’d stand off to one side to give them
the opportunity to spend some time with Kevin, but she
steadfastly refused to leave his room. She had spent too much
time apart from Kevin and she was determined to spend as much
time as possible with him while he recovered.
Several
hours later, Kevin woke up to a dark room. He desperately needed
to use the washroom and the pain medication had worn off again.
“Abigail, are you still here?” Kevin said as loud as he
could.
Abigail
jumped when she heard Kevin calling for her in the dark. She
quickly moved to turn on the light. “Of course, I’m still
here. Is something wrong? Are you in pain?” Abigail asked.
“Yeah,
my side hurts. But I was wondering if you could help me get to
the washroom?” Kevin inquired.
“I’ll
go get a nurse. I don’t think you’re supposed to be walking
around yet.” Abigail replied. She stood out in the hall while
a nurse assisted Kevin. She gratefully accepted the cup of tea
that Kevin’s mother offered her. She had flown in as soon as
she heard what had happened and they hadn’t really taken the
opportunity to talk as of yet.
As
Abigail took a seat in the waiting room across from Kevin’s
mother, Ann said, “It’s a shame that we have to meet in this
way.”
“Yes
it is. I’ve heard so much about you. Kevin thinks very highly
of you.” Abigail said.
“Kevin
and I have always been extremely close, especially since his
father passed away. I don’t mean to be rude Abigail, but I was
wondering where your parents are.” Ann asked.
“Oh.
They were both killed in a car accident when I was eighteen.”
Abigail replied quietly, taking a moment to remember her
parents.
“I’m
sorry to hear that. I know it was extremely difficult for Kevin
when he lost his father. I can’t fathom how difficult it is to
loose both parents at such a young age.” Ann said
sympathetically.
“It
wasn’t easy. But if there was one positive thing I could say
about Frank, it was that he helped me get through that extremely
difficult time in my life.” Abigail said.
“It’s
amazing that you’re still able to remember that about
Frank.” Ann said.
“Well,
it’s about the only positive thing I care to remember,
although, the year that we were married was a good year. I would
have never guessed that he was just using me. I almost want to
believe, even to this date, that he did love me at one time. For
a while there, I actually wondered if I was meant to be loved by
anyone.” Abigail said.
“Have
faith in Kevin. I know that Kevin loves you very much and once
this is all over and you’re able to move on with your life, I
think you and Kevin can be very happy together.” Ann said.
“That’s
my hope. I still have my doubts, but those doubts are slowly
being erased.” Abigail said.
While
they were talking, the nurse exited Kevin’s room and said,
“Abigail, Kevin is asking for you.”
“Go
ahead sweetie. I’m going to go back to the hotel and try to
get some sleep.” Ann said.
“Why
don’t you go in and say goodnight to him while he’s
awake.” Abigail suggested.
“Thanks
dear. I’ll only take a few minutes.” Ann said as she gently
hugged Abigail and then proceeded into Kevin’s room. Abigail
liked Kevin’s mother. She was a very warm, kind and sincere
woman and she could see why Kevin thought so highly of her. Her
had been like that as well, and she wished that both her parents
were alive to meet Kevin. She knew that they would have loved
Kevin because he was the warm and caring gentleman that her
mother had always dreamed she would meet. She smiled when the
thought came to her that maybe her mother had a hand in her and
Kevin meeting.
“Abigail,
I’m on my way out. Kevin really would like to see you now. Try
and get some rest tonight and don’t hesitate to call if you
need anything at all.” Ann said.
“Thanks
Ann, see you tomorrow.” Abigail said as she stood up and
walked towards Kevin’s room.
Kevin
smiled when he saw Abigail enter his room. She looked exhausted,
but he still found her to be extremely beautiful. His mother had
just finished telling him how much she liked Abigail and she
hoped that they’d finally find some peace in their
relationship. “So what do you think of my mom?” Kevin asked,
able to talk a little easier as the pain medication started to
work.
“I
can see why you think so highly of her. She’s an incredibly
kind and warm woman. She kind of reminds me of my own mother.”
Abigail said.
“She
likes you, you know that right.” Kevin remarked
“Well
I wasn’t positive. But it’s nice to know that the feeling is
mutual.” Abigail said.
“We
don’t have to make any decisions yet, but she offered her
house in Lexington to us. She thought I might want to spend some
time there while I recover.” Kevin said.
“That
sounds like an excellent idea! Get you away from the city and in
an environment where two women that love you can spoil you
rotten.” Abigail said with a smile.
“Are
you sure you wouldn’t mind going there?” Kevin asked.
“Not
at all. We could both use some serious downtime and it sounds
like the perfect place from what you’ve told me.” Abigail
replied.
“It’s
a huge piece of property I bought her. There is a separate
guesthouse, and I thought we could stay there. Give us some
necessary privacy as well as some time with my family.” Kevin
said.
“Are
you sure your mother wouldn’t mind that?” Abigail asked.
“It
was her suggestion Abi.” Kevin said.
“Well,
ok then. Just as long as she doesn’t mind.” Abigail said.
Abigail watched as a concerned look crossed Kevin’s face.
“What is it Kevin?” Abigail asked.
“I’m
more than a little concerned about you Abi. I know this has been
a difficult day for you I’m just wondering how you’re
holding up.” Kevin said, as he struggled to stay awake. The
sedative he was given was starting to take effect.
“I’ll
be fine as long as I know you’re all right. We’ll talk about
this more when you’re a little stronger. Now stop fighting the
medication and let yourself get some rest. I’ll be right by
your side all night, so if you need anything at all, just
ask.” Abigail said.
“Thank-you
Abigail. You have no idea how much it means to me to have you by
my side.” Kevin said.
“I
know Kevin. Now get some rest.” Abigail said as she lifted
Kevin’s hand and pressed it to her lips. “I love you.”
Abigail whispered.
“I
love you too.” Kevin said before he drifted off into a
much-needed peaceful sleep.
Abigail
didn’t get much sleep that night. She would doze off from time
to time, but she took the opportunity to do a lot of thinking.
She wondered what their future would be like now that they were
able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Brian had told
her that it had all ready been decided that the remainder of the
world tour would be postponed indefinitely. They would not
reschedule any dates until Kevin and his doctors were confident
that he was ready to handle the rigorous schedule that came
along with touring. That would give Kevin and Abigail a great
amount of time to spend together. They had a great deal to
discuss and work out, seeing that she really had no idea what
Kevin was thinking. She only assumed that Kevin would want her
by his side, but he had never actually spoken the words. In the
end, she finally decided not to rush into anything and just let
things naturally progress between them. In reality they hadn’t
actually known each other for very long, but with everything
that they had been through, it felt like they had been together
for a lifetime. She would simply enjoy Kevin’s company and
allow herself to get to know him better and vice versa. Once
this black cloud cleared, there would be no more secrets looming
over their relationship. Even with everything that she had been
through and as she looked at a pale Kevin lying in the hospital
bed, she couldn’t say that she would change very much. Of
course, she wished that Kevin had never gotten hurt, but now
that it was apparent that he would be fine, she felt at peace.
Frank was no longer a third person threatening their
relationship, and that was something that Abigail was very
grateful for.
