The Secrets Trilogy: Part 1 - Constant Fear

Chapter 4

It took Kevin a few days, but he was finally holding Alexis’s number in his hand. No matter how hard he tried, he had not been able to get Abigail out of his head since the interview. He had no idea what he was going to say to her though. Heck, he wasn’t even sure if she would remember him. Besides, with his luck a beautiful woman like that probably all ready had a boyfriend.

But, he finally decided he would call her and make up a story about needing the magazine’s contact information for their records. Sure, it was a lame excuse, but he had convinced himself that it might just work. Kevin decided that he didn’t want to wait any longer, so he picked up the phone and slowly dialed the number, ensuring that he didn’t make a mistake. When someone answered the phone he asked for Alexis Fairchild’s assistant. He almost lost his nerve and hung up when he heard Abigail’s familiar voice answer the phone and say, “Alexis Fairchild’s office. How can I help you?”

“Hi Abigail! I’m not sure if you remember me, but my name is Kevin Richardson. We met at an interview both you and Alexis conducted with our group just a few days ago.” Kevin said. He was nervous as hell as he spoke into the phone. He dealt with screaming girls and women on a daily basis, yet it was still difficult for him to make the first move where Abigail was concerned, but he knew if he didn’t make the move, they would never have a chance.

Abigail recognized the voice almost immediately. He had such a distinct accent that she would recognize anywhere. “Of course I remember you Kevin. What can I do for you?” Abigail asked as she tried to get over the shock that she was actually talking to him on the phone. The truth was that his image had been haunting her ever since that interview. She just couldn’t get him out of her mind.

“I’m calling on behalf of our management team. It seems they have misplaced the information on your magazine. I was wondering if I could get that information from you? I’ll be happy to pass the information on to the appropriate person.” Kevin said, crossing his fingers that she didn’t see through his story.

Abigail laughed as she listened to Kevin’s reason for calling. Not only did she know that his management company had all the necessary information on their publication, but she could also hear the nervousness in his voice. “I’m sorry for being so rude Kevin, but I can’t help but wonder if there is another reason why you’re calling. I spoke to someone at The Firm several days prior to the interview, and I’m positive they have all the necessary information.” Alison said with a smile that she was sure showed in her voice.

Kevin was mortified. He should have just left well enough alone and forgotten about her. He could see the rumors floating around the internet talking about how he had been rejected. But he had all ready embarrassed himself, so he figured he might as well tell her the real reason why he had called. The worst thing she could say was she wasn’t interested or she all ready had a boyfriend. “Am I that transparent?” Kevin said as he laughed nervously. “First of all, I apologize for calling and lying to you like I did. You are right. I am calling for another reason.” Kevin paused for a few seconds and said, “God, this is so embarrassing.”

“Well you might as well tell me, seeing you’ve got my full attention.” Abigail said as she tried to suppress her laughter. She tried to picture his embarrassed face as she waited for him to continue. ‘I bet he looks so cute.’ Abigail said to herself.

“Ok, here goes. I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful you are when we met the other day. So I was wondering if I could interest you in dinner or a drink sometime soon?” Kevin asked. He let his lungs fill with air again as soon as he realized he had been holding his breath. He held his breath once again as he waited for Abigail to answer.

Abigail was surprised to hear Kevin admit that he wanted to see her again. She had assumed that was his reason for calling, but it was different hearing him confirm it. Her head was telling her to thank him and politely tell him that she wasn’t interested, but her heart took control of the situation and before she knew it she had agreed to have dinner with Kevin. “Is tomorrow night good for you?” Kevin asked. He hoped she would be free, because he wasn’t sure if he could wait much longer than that to see her again.

“Yeah, I don’t think I have any plans.” Abigail replied, instantly kicking herself for agree to meet him.

“Good. I know this great little Italian restaurant called Italiano’s. How about we meet there at 7pm tomorrow night? It’s a quiet little restaurant that will enable us to have some privacy.” Kevin said.

“That sounds great. I’ll see you then.” Abigail said just before she hung up the phone.

‘That wasn’t so bad after all.” Kevin said to himself as he placed her number safely in his organizer. He had forgotten all about embarrassing himself when he started going through ideas in his head. He wanted to make it an evening she would never forget.

Abigail was thankful that the day was almost over when Kevin had called; because there was no way she was going to get anything accomplished for the remainder of the afternoon. In the end, she told Alexis that she had a few things to look after and she left work an hour early. She had no formal clothing, so her first stop was the mall.
