The Secrets Trilogy: Part 1 - Constant Fear

Chapter 7

Abigail was pretty surprised when she got back to work that afternoon, because she didn’t have to deal with very many questions. In fact, Abigail was the one that had to stop by her best friend Julia’s desk to ask her if she was willing to come over to her apartment for dinner that night so she could ask her for some advice. Julia had all ready figured out that Abigail was trying to hide her past and just move on with her life and she sensed that she was going to find out exactly who Abigail Phillips was.

Over pizza that night, Abigail told Julia the full details about her past, leaving no stone unturned. She told her about the death of her parents, which led to her relationship with Frank, and the ups and downs of their marriage. It took Abigail a few minutes to decide that she was doing the right thing, but she eventually told Julia about Frank’s death and how she had spent three years in jail.

“So no one knows that you were actually acquitted and released from jail?” Julia asked, astounded that Abigail had been able to move on after so much turmoil.

“Even the prison I was at believed I was just getting transferred. They still have no idea who killed him, so my lawyer thought it was best that I move to another part of the country and assume a new identity. They have no idea if the person that killed Frank will come after me if they learn that I am out. So now can you see why I am so reluctant to get involved with Kevin? I can’t risk being found, and I doubt Kevin wants to get involved with someone who has a past like mine.” Abigail explained, relieved that she had finally told someone her story.

“Yeah, I would say that’s a pretty good reason. What are you going to do? Maybe you can tell Kevin. I’m sure he would understand and be able to keep it to himself.” Julia said, trying to find a solution that would benefit both Abigail and Kevin.

“No! I can’t tell him. No one is supposed to know Julia. So you have to swear to me that you won’t tell anyone.” Abigail said, as she started to panic.

“Don’t worry sweetie. Your secret is safe with me. But I have to ask again, what are you going to do about Kevin?” Julia asked.

“That’s where it gets even more complicated. It is so obvious that Kevin wants to take things further. He may think he does a good job of hiding his feelings, but he wears his heart on his sleeve. It doesn’t make it easy when my feelings for him keep growing everyday as well. I desperately want to give him what he wants. God I am so confused. What do you think I should do Julia?” Abigail said as she fought back tears that had been threatening to fall since she sat down with Julia.

“I think you need to trust Kevin and at least tell him part of the truth. Then tell him how important it is for you to keep a low profile. I sense you’re really torn because you really do like him. I don’t envy you having to make this decision.” Julia said.

“I’ll think about it Julia, but I’m not sure I want him to even know about my past. Who knows how he would react if he found out that I’ve been married before or even worse, that I spent three years in jail.” Abigail said.

“Good luck girl. I commend you though cause it’s got to be tough to start a new life and always having to remember that you have to maintain a low profile. It can’t be easy. I’m not sure I could do it.” Julie said.

“You learn to deal with it when your only other choice is to remain in prison. I was handling it ok until Kevin walked into my life. I wouldn’t be so worried if he was just a normal guy, but we both know how huge the group is. If the media caught wind of our relationship and my past, it would spread like wildfire.” Abigail said.

“Follow your heart Abigail, that’s all I can suggest. But let me tell you this, you’ll regret it some day if you let Kevin walk away.” Julia said before she left. Abigail knew in her heart that Julia was right, and she was pretty sure that if she didn’t make a move soon, she may very well loose any chance she had with Kevin.

After Julia left that night, she gave Kevin a quick call before she went to bed, just to tell him that she was thinking about him.. He was in the middle of something, but he seemed to genuinely appreciate the fact that she had called. She thanked him again for lunch earlier that day and told him she was looking forward to seeing him on Saturday.

Kevin smiled as he hung up the phone. Maybe there was still some hope for them after all. He promised to call her the next day to confirm their plans for Saturday. Kevin tried not to get his hopes up too high, but he really wanted a relationship with Abigail. Saturday couldn’t come quickly enough as far as he was concerned.

Abigail tossed and turned that night as she contemplated her future with Kevin. She knew Julia was right when she said she’d regret it if she let Kevin walk out of her life. Even though they had only known each other for a couple of weeks, she couldn’t imagine her life without him. She had grown accustomed to hearing his voice on the phone every day, and she always anticipated their next date. As she finally drifted off to sleep, she was no closer to a decision. She would just have to wait and see what her heart said when she saw Kevin on Saturday. Deep down inside, she knew that if she put the fate of their relationship in the hands of her heart, she would be giving Kevin what he wanted.
