Chapter 8
The next day was a blur to Laura. It helped having Kevin there with her in the morning, but she had to remind herself not to get used to it. He had just told her that morning, that they would be finalizing all the plans for the tour, and he would most likely have to leave within the week. She knew it was coming, but it still came as a shock. Kevin promised her that he would be over at a more reasonable hour that night, so they could talk about it. Talk about what she wondered. Was he thinking the same thing she was? Was letting Kevin back into her heart a mistake? She guessed she would find out later that day.
Laura checked her messages as she sat in rush hour traffic. She smiled when she came to the last message, which was from Kevin. Their meeting went smoothly that afternoon and he had arranged with Gloria to let him into the apartment so he could cook her dinner. She was excited, but again she had to remind herself not to get used to it.
She smiled as she parked beside his black 4Runner almost half an hour later. What she thought would be a twenty-minute commute, turned into almost an hour. She would have to ask Kevin if there was a better way to get to work.
She unlocked the apartment door, and she instantly recognized the smell of fried chicken. Kevin obviously did not hear her enter the apartment, and she just stood there and watched Kevin as he worked in the kitchen. He looked amazing in black jeans and a white wifebeater. She finally said, "What does a girl have to do to get your attention."
Kevin washed his hands before taking Laura in his arms. He felt a tightness in his groin, as he realized how good Laura looked in her suit and her legs looked great in heels. "Do you always dress like that at work?" Kevin asked.
"Why, do you not approve?" Laura asked.
"Oh I like it, don't worry about that. I just wonder how many other guys like it as well. I think you need to come work with us, if you're going to dress that way." Kevin commented.
"Very funny Kevin. Just let me go change into something more comfortable." Laura said as she walked away from Kevin.
Half an hour later, Kevin joined Laura at the table, once he had everything at the table. Laura told Kevin all about her first day at work and how she thought she had made a good decision. She liked the people she had met so far, and already had a good understanding for the business since, she had worked in another location.
Kevin and Laura went for a long walk after they finished dinner and cleaned up the kitchen. "So are you going to tell me how things went today?" Laura asked reluctantly, fearing what Kevin was going to tell her.
"Well you know that the European tour begins in less than a week now. Management decided that we are heading over to Belgium tomorrow afternoon, so we can have a few days to practice once we get there." Kevin said quietly.
"And you're gone for 3 months right?" Laura questioned.
"Yeah, but then we tour North America after a month off." Kevin said, trying to convince Laura and himself, that it wasn't that bad.
Laura couldn't say anything. She knew it was going to come to this, and was afraid that she couldn't deal with him being away.
They continued to walk in silence, until Kevin stopped and took her into his arms. He was afraid he knew what was going through her mind. He just simply held her in his arms for a few minutes, savoring the moment. Without saying a word, Kevin turned around and they headed back to the apartment.
They stopped in front of Kevin's 4Runner and stood there in silence for a few minutes, until Kevin cupped her chin in his hand and lightly kissed her.
Laura looked down at the ground and said, "I think you should go."
"Laura, I don't want to leave things like this." Kevin said desperately.
"I'm sorry Kevin, I don't know what else to do." Laura said as she tried to hold back the tears.
"Tell me that you will give this a chance Laura. I told you this wasn't going to be easy, but if we both work at it, I know we can make it work." Kevin pleaded.
"Maybe I didn't know what I was getting myself into." Laura said.
"So that's it Laura. It's over?" Kevin said in an angry tone.
"I guess it is." Laura said as she walked away. She knew if she stayed, she would have lost it.
"I am not giving up on you Laura. I know you let me back into your heart. You can't just turn it off now." Kevin said as he followed Laura. He caught up to her, and lightly took her wrist in his hand.
"Please just go Kevin." Laura pleaded.
"Not until you tell me you are going to try." Kevin pleaded.
"I can't do that Kevin! I'm sorry, but I am not prepared for dealing with a relationship like this right now. Isn't this why you left me in the first place." Laura yelled at Kevin.
"But I realize now that I made a mistake." Kevin said.
"Well I might regret this later, but I want you to leave Kevin. I can't live with a boyfriend that isn't around. I'm sorry." Laura said. She turned and quickly walked towards the front door of the apartment, hoping that Kevin would leave this time.
Kevin watched as Laura walked away from him, and felt like screaming. He climbed into his truck and drove away, not knowing if he would ever see Laura again.
