Chapter One
Amanda sighed with relief as she sat her last suitcase in the living room of her brand new apartment. "Not bad," she thought to herself as she looked around the living room. To the casual observer, it looked like a bomb went off, since there were boxes stacked everywhere and furniture all over the place. But Amanda was pleased with it and Florida in general. She had just moved to Tampa Florida the day before to finally get her dream job working with a major league hockey team, the Tampa Bay Lightning. The next day would be her first day on the job, so with a sigh, she picked up her case and moved to her bedroom. "I guess if I have to work tomorrow, I better get my clothes unpacked first," she laughed to herself.
The remaining hours of the morning and early afternoon were
very busy for Amanda. She unpacked the basic essentials and arranged some furniture, and
finally got to where she could take a break. ""Whew! What a
job!" she said as she fell into her
favorite recliner. The recliner, which she had bought several years ago in
Nashville, Tennessee during her stay there, was the first thing she had arranged right in
front of the television. As she flipped on the set and kicked off her shoes, she made a
mental note to call the cable people tomorrow to get the cable hooked up, because all she
had at the moment was the local station. And at the moment all they were showing was
the news. She was pleased with the sports report however, because it gave an excellent
preseason report on her team. She turned the set off as she got up and walked into the
bathroom, tossing her clothes in the laundry basket by the door on the way in. She
reached over into her shower stall and turned on the shower, sighing with happiness as the
hot water cascaded over her.
"God that feels good," she thought.
Several minutes later, she stepped out of the shower and was drying her hair when she
heard her phone ring. She made a dash for the phone her body still dripping wet and
picked it up with a breathless "Hello?"
"Hey Amanda glad you made it in one piece!" laughed the voice of her boss David
Lohrei. "So how do you like Florida so far?"
"I haven't seen much outside of my front yard yet David" said Amanda with a
smile.
"But I am looking forward to exploring. Everything okay? I wasn't expecting to
hear from anyone until tomorrow."
"Actually, I called to tell you can take a week to come in if you like, "said
David. "These negotiations with the referees are taking longer that we
expected so the season is being held back a few weeks opening. Do you mind? I know
how eager you were to get started."
"Well, yeah I was, but I can make good use of the extra time," she said.
"This place will take some organizing!"
"Okay then see you in a week okay?" David said. "Don't work too hard yet
have some fun before you get here!" he laughed.
She smiled as she said, "Okay David I will and I won't. See you in a week!
Bye!"
Hanging up the phone, she reflected that just when you needed a break fate popped one in
there. So even though it was only eight o'clock, she decided to call it a night, and
slid in bed, setting her alarm for nine the next morning. Her last thought before
sliding into sleep was how much she liked Florida.
