Chapter 10
Kevin walked out of the bedroom and looked around. He
became terrified when he couldn’t see Nick. He ran out the front door and in
his frantic search, he ran right by Nick as he sat in a corner of the porch.
“It’s ok Kevin. I’m right here.” Nick said, sensing Kevin’s fear.
“I couldn’t sense your presence.” Kevin said.
“I know. I wanted it that way.” Nick said.
“Let me in Nick. I need to know what you’re thinking
and feeling.” Kevin said.
“I can’t right now Kevin. I have a lot of things that I
need to figure out. I promise we will talk soon though. I have lots of
questions.” Nick replied.
“You aren’t angry at me are you?” Kevin asked.
“No I’m not angry. I just wish I had been told
sooner.” Nick said.
“It’s really only ever used as punishment Nick.”
Kevin said.
“I believe you.” Nick said. After a long pause, he
asked, “Is she dead yet?”
“No. But she’s sleeping right now. She will probably
sleep for several days.” Kevin replied.
“Can we go back now?” Nick asked.
“Sure. Althea is going to stay here with Thora until she
wakes up. Then she’ll take Thora home.” Kevin said.
Half an hour later, Kevin, Nick and Halther were on their
way back to Orlando. Halther agreed to drive back and let Kevin and Nick get
some much-needed rest. There was no doubt that fighting Thora off over the past
24-hours weakened Nick.
*************
Halther had dropped Kevin and Nick off at Kevin’s place.
Nick had agreed that he wasn’t ready to be alone and he needed to talk to
Kevin. They both slept for the remainder of the day and well into the evening.
When Kevin woke up, he found Nick in the game room in front of the PlayStation.
Kevin couldn’t help but notice how tired Nick looked. “How did you sleep?”
Kevin asked.
“I didn’t.” Nick said without taking his eyes off the
TV screen.
“Nick you need to sleep to build your strength back
up.” Kevin said with great concern in his voice.
“I just have a lot on my mind, that’s all.” Nick
said.
“Are you ready to talk?” Kevin asked.
“Would there have been any way to send me back at the
beginning?” Nick asked.
Kevin sat down beside Nick and said, “There is no way out
Nick. If you get sent back to the other side, then death is the only outcome.”
“Does anyone actually enjoy it?” Nick asked.
“Not fully. There will always be a part of you that will
be unhappy. But it’s a different kind of unhappy.” Kevin admitted.
“How do you do it Kevin? How have you lived with this for
so long?” Nick asked.
Kevin wasn’t used to dealing with emotions like this. He
wasn’t sure how to answer all the questions that Nick had. But he knew he had
to find the answers. Deep inside he knew Nick would not rest until he knew the
answers. “Bear with me Nick. I’m not accustomed to dealing with emotions
like this anymore. I do know that as time goes on, the human emotions disappear.
So the unhappiness I feel is different than yours. For me it’s more like an
impatient feeling.” Kevin said.
“I don’t want this anymore Kevin.” Nick said sadly.
“Think about what you are saying Nick. You can’t just
end your life. We have a very good life compared to most like us. We live a
glamorous life Nick. So what we’re a little different than the other guys and
our fans. Think about what it feels like to be performing for thousands of fans.
Think about what it feels like to hear our songs, your voice on the radio. Do
you really want to give all that up?” Kevin said, feeling more emotions that
he had in years.
“I just don’t want to live it like this.” Nick
replied.
“Just think about what you have Nick. It’s really not
that bad.” Kevin said as he stood up and left the room so Nick could have some
time alone to think.
Nick tried to concentrate on the game he was playing, but
he couldn’t. There were so many things running through his mind. He knew how
fortunate they were and he would have been extremely happy, if he were only
human. He was sure he would never make a good vampire. He didn’t like feeding
off of people mentally to stay alive. He was thankful that he wasn’t a blood
vampire, because he knew he would have been dead long ago. He absolutely refused
to take someone’s blood and it bothered him that no one saw a problem with it.
Kevin came back into the room. “AJ just called. He’s
having a party over at his place. Do you feel like going?” Kevin asked.
“Just tell him I all ready had plans for tonight.” Nick
replied.
“Nick it might do you some good to be around the other
guys. Howie and Brian are supposed to be there as well.” Kevin said, hoping he
could get Nick away from his haunting thoughts.
“It has been a few weeks since I’ve seen either one of
them. Can you give me a few minutes to get ready?” Nick said, changing his
mind.
“Of course.” Kevin said.
