Tim Zimmerman and the King's Brass - Americana

ITG Journal - February 1999 - Page 65

Tim Zimmerman and the King's Brass is a group of "Christian professionals" from across the United States who tour extensively, performing over 100 concerts a year. The members of the Aire Born Strings supplement the ensemble on several pieces as well as organist Dan Miller. Americana is a recording of mostly secular American music. Many of the pieces are arranged by the group's members. With its many mood changes, interesting arrangements, and fine performances, this CD is one of the best of its kind. Most impressive is the diversity of the selections throughout the recording. The listener is treated to a variety of music ranging from Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man to the spiritual Deep River and the famous Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. It is difficult to single out selections because all are done so well; however, the arrangements of Dixie! Dixie, Hallelujah! by Eric Alexander and When the Saints Go Marching In arranged by Tim Zimmerman are particularly enjoyable. It would be difficult to enjoy these arrangements as much without the fine performances of this outstanding group of musicians. Even during selections such as America, The Beautiful and My Country 'Tis of Thee, when the music is arranged almost too obvious to elicit emotion, the performances are convincing. Intonation is superb, tone quality is consistent and characteristic, and there is energy and spirit throughout. Although the trumpet playing is excellent, the trombone section deserves particular mention. The sound is warm, well-balanced, and energetic with excellent ensemble and solo playing. The recording quality of this CD is also noteworthy. This recording is highly recommended! (Kevin Scully, Pine Bush, NY)
