Born in a family where music runs in the blood. Jayanthi, niece of the Violin Legend Lalgudi. G. Jayaraman , is the disciple of her aunt Smt. Padmavathy Ananthagopalan, who is a very senior and distinguished veena player. She followed the traditional "Gurukula " system of learning music and flowered into a concert artist at the age of sixteen. There was no stopping after that. The "Sruthi" (an international monthly exclusively for classical music) called her "An artiste mature beyond her years".
Laurels and accolades kept pouring in right from her school and college days. Later, several awards from reputed organizations made their way.
Jayanthi had the rare privilege of being one of the select few disciples of Veena Virtuoso Dr. S. Balachander. Being one of his favorite disciples, Jayanthi was indeed blessed to receive his full attention, which enabled her to imbibe the innovative technicalities of his style of playing. She was also fortunate to accompany him during some of his concerts and Lecture - Demonstrations.
Career :
Jayanthi started her concert career playing with
her guru Smt. Padmavathy Ananthagopalan . The duo performed widely all
over India and abroad. They got rave reviews and acclamation
wherever they went. The "Hindustan Times raved...?Even a most
hostile and conceited critic would not have found a single flaw in this
stunning show of sublime conception and perfect execution throughout!?
Jayanthi also performed a great number of concerts in the famous 'Violin-Veena -Venu? trio along with Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi and Sikkil Mala under the guidance of her Uncle Sri. Lalgudi G. Jayaraman.
Jayanthi soon took over and started performing solo concerts all over the globe. She is right now one of the leading veena players of the world. She has established herself as an artiste with 'rare insight, classicism and technical sophistication'.
K.S. Mahadevan , one of the leading Music critics said: - "After listening to Jayanthi's veena concert , one came back with the strong conviction that, we MUST believe in the Veena and its immense potentialities of revealing the 'shoots of everlastingness' in Carnatic music".
Jayanthi has many cassettes and CD recordings to her credit. She has also to her credit North South Jugalbandhi concerts.
She is an 'A' grade artiste of the AIR and TV. She has played for the South zone hook up programmes, the Radio Sangeeth Sammelan and has also recorded for the National channel.
Jayanthi has traveled extensively and her virtuosity
has been acclaimed worldwide.
