On April 21, 1996, I had an experience that many Smitty fans could only dream of! Through the help of a good friend, I had the honor of Meeting Michael face-to-face, before his appearance at Nassau Coliseum on the I'll Lead You Home Tour. I'll never forget my friend taking me backstage after Three Crosses performed. We stood backstage in a long hall for a few minutes, and all of a sudden, I felt someone's hand on my shoulder. I turned around, and there he was, with a huge smile on his face! We shook hands, and I had a smile on my face that I thought only some heavy plastic surgery could remove! I looked right at him and said, "I've been waiting for 11 years to meet you!" Then he smiled and said, "11 years? Wow, that's way too long!" He then signed my issue of the September, 1995 issue of "CCM Magazine", of which he was on the front cover. Then, my friend took the terrific picture above that holds a proud place in my wallet, my truck, and a much larger version on my bedroom wall.
Thank you John, for making my childhood wish come true! And Michael? If you're reading this, thanks for the memories, the music and most of all, for being such an incredible role model to me with your music and your ministry. Maybe someday, we'll meet again!
