Shane Minor Happy to Cruise in the Slow Lane
Roger W. Hoskins   April 20, 2001

Shane Minor has yet to reach the top of country music's ladder of success, but the singer who graduated from Modesto High School says that slow is the only way to go.
"I love the climb," says Minor, 32. "I think the unknown is what it makes it fun."
The climb has included some slides. Last summer, Mercury Records scaled back its number of artists and Minor was one of the casualties.
Yet Minor has only one thought about the split with Mercury: gratitude.
"When God shuts one door, he opens another. When Mercury and I parted company, I hit my knees and asked what to do," he says. "I learned a valuable lesson -- to be myself and not listen to everybody. The problem I had is that I'm not cocky. I was so humble and thankful just to be in the business. But I was blinded by what was happening."
Mercury manufactured an image for him as a guy in leathers, a look he wasn't especially comfortable with, he says.
"I was going to concerts and people said my pictures and my albums didn't look like me. The music business is a gamble, just like Vegas. Now I have the experience of rolling the dice and crapping out."
Minor says the No. 1 thing in his life right now is songwriting. His more amicable relationship with his new label, RCA, is allowing him to do that on his own terms.
"If you were a painter, it couldn't come off as well if somebody told you what to paint. RCA is giving me the chance to express myself."
Minor's self-expression is translating into a few "message" songs and an upbeat love song. Minor thinks the latter, "You're in My Head," has a good chance of eclipsing his biggest hit to date, "Slave to the Habit," which hit No. 12 on Billboard's top 20 country singles chart. Minor had two other songs on the chart, "Ordinary Love" at No. 17 and "I think You're Beautiful" at No. 21.
He says "You're in My Head" came easily.
"I got it strictly by fluke, just playing a different kind of riff on the guitar. I wrote it in two hours," he says of the upbeat song that opens:
      "You're in my head,
      you're in my heart,
      you're in that song
on the radio in my car."
"The RCA A&R (artist and repertoire) guy loved it. He says we have to cut this."
That song and the possible shuffling of others is holding up release of the CD.
"The songs (RCA) keeps picking, well, I keep bumping 'em, 'cause I keep writing better stuff," Minor says.
Another key to Minor's writing renaissance is his collaboration with Jeff Steele, formerly of the successful '90s country band Boy Howdy. Steele quit performing to devote himself to songwriting. Many of the Minor-Steele collaborations are candidates for the new CD.
"One day we were working and I asked Jeff where he was from. He told me he was from a small town in California that I would never have heard of. I said, 'Try me,' and he said Stockton."
Minor says he's now looking to release the CD in the fall. The delay will help keep his album from being lost in the usual summer onslaught of big-name artist releases.
Delays seem to be following Minor these days. He has an unreleased single, "So in Love with You," that is on the soundtrack for the film "Ring of Fire." But the movie about pro rodeo bull riders, starring Daryl Hannah and Keifer Sutherland, has yet to be released and the studio that made it has shut down.
So Minor must bide his time to hear whether his song will remain on the track or if the movie will even get to theaters.
But that's OK by Minor.
"Going slow is what I like. I ain't quittin'. I love what I'm doing."
Shane Minor plays at 8 p.m. today at the State Theatre, 1307 J St., Modesto. Tickets are $20. Call 527-4697. He also plays at 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday at Mother Lode Fairgrounds, Sonora. Tickets are $15, with group rates available. Call 533-2013.

ENTERTAINEMNT NOTES: Major buzz building over Shane Minor

By ROGER W. HOSKINS
BEE STAFF WRITER
(Published: Friday, April 27, 2001)

Modestans got a glimpse last week at why Shane Minor is creating a stir around Nashville.

A relaxed Minor gave a driving but intimate country performance to about 250 fans at the State Theatre.

Manager Dana Plummer was so impressed that she made plans to book Minor for next year. "He's going to be huge," predicts Plummer, who wants to sign him before his price rises.

Nashville disc jockey Taylor Morgan accompanied the Minor entourage west. She says the Nashville buzz is getting louder about the Modesto High alumnus.

Morgan is the drive-time DJ at WSM, often honored as the country station of the year and the home of the Grand Ol' Opry. Morgan is in charge of booking the Opry and she says she's a big Minor fan.

"Danny Wells is one of top songwriters around right now. He just had a hit for Collin Raye," Morgan says. "Danny worked with Shane for one day and he called me up right after. He said 'Taylor, there's no reason on Earth why Shane won't be the next country superstar.'

"Everyone is convinced that Shane is going to be huge," Morgan says. "He has a strong fan base in Nashville -- I'd say there were a gazillion of what we call Minor maniacs."

Lynn Stewart might be among that number, except she lives in Wolcott, Conn. She flew in to see Minor in concert for the 37th, 38th and 39th times -- once at the State and at two shows in Sonora the next evening. Jan Grannis of Shreveport, La., flew in to see her sixth, seventh and eighth shows.

Minor, 33, saved the best and most touching moment of the State show for last. Called back for an encore by a standing ovation, he spoke softly.

"Now would be the time for something up-tempo … but that's not how I'm feeling. I'm home and feeling sentimental. I lost my dad last November, and if it's all right with you, I'd like to sing something for him … I'm sure he's got the best seat in the house right now.

"This was Dad's favorite song. We used to sing it at the top of our lungs when were driving in the pickup."

Minor then sang Merle Haggard's "The Way I Am." As he left the stage, he pointed skyward.

It's not the cover, but it's still Rolling Stone

Grandaddy and Merle Haggard both earned mention from Lucy Shaw in her "On the Road" column in the May 10 issue of Rolling Stone.

The column quoted Jason Lytle's vow that success hadn't changed the band: "I got kind of embarrassed when I saw our CD in Borders, so I just want everyone to know we're still us."

Incidentally, tickets go on sale Sunday at 10 a.m. for the Grandaddy-Coldplay show at the Warfield in San Francisco. Modesto-based Grandaddy and the Brit band Coldplay will perform June 20 at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7). Tickets ($22.50) are available at Ticketmaster outlets.

Haggard, who used to spend his summers in the Hughson-Modesto area, told the Rolling Stone columnist that he was getting road weary. "I'm going to put myself in a casino that treats me like the Desert Inn did Frank Sinatra. Try to get one to give me a steady job so I won't have to travel so much."

While filming his video for "Wreck on the Highway" two weeks ago in Chico, Haggard told his friend Modesto-based broadcaster Chester Smith that all seats to the rest of his concerts this year have been sold. He's been so busy, he's planning on taking two months off in the fall.

Haggard has come a long way since playing to a half-empty house two years ago at Oakwood Lake.
