dv8 was born 1987-1988
wilson:
i started writing music for dv8 while
in a metal/hard-core band called the OMO's but musically and creatively
i was moving in a different direction than the rest of the band.
the first song to be recorded after i left the OMO's was "bearded
fat woman loves skeleton man",
the concept and music for it was born and recorded on a friend's
cheap 4-track {early1988}.no vocals.
a couple of months later i started doing 3 track recordings.
guitar to recorder - then tape and live guitar to tape, then 2
recorded guitars to tape recorder while adding live bass lines.
the vocal lines i wrote were not meant for a front person type,
i heard the voice as another instrument with delays,distortion
and other effects; all the singers i knew were'nt experimental
and wouldn't want me to tell them how to use their voice so i
started singing. i worked in a noisey machine filled factory back
then,so i would hide behind these machines and practice using
my voice as an instrument.
the brain!
sha would let me use his R*8 all the time,we would write beats
run the R*8 through a digital delay pedal and come up with really
great beats. then one day he took me to N.Y.C. and credit card
scammed
an R*5 out of S++ A++ for me.
once i learned how to use it i couldn't stop writing beats;
layers and layers of beats.
then i went back to 3 track recordings.
..too much music! needed words!
i was too hyper to write about love so i would write about hurt
and insecurities whenever i felt it.
SHA'S 4-track
studio: deeply into the N.Y. industrial scene {underground back
then} we recorded lots of violent dance beats along with distorted
factory noises making these techno-industrial stomp arrangements
before going to Communion every tuesday night at the Limelight!
i needed to learn how to use the 4track so i chose one of the
shortest songs i had which was then "so wonderful" {which
was inspired by the book "ask alice" and being drunk.}
the song is about drugs but i was a virgin to drugs back then.
"stitch" was a story made up in my head about sha and
his cheating girlfriend. {spring:1991}
"so wonderful"- "stitch that bitch"
this 2-song demo was dubbed over a box of stolen kids cassettes
from my job. {"dr.beethoven's, don't play with fire!"}
sha

"BASS PLAYER
AND DRUMMER NEEDED!"
I re-met john
at a show in Jersey City, I was at a friend's show and John's
band was opening up for them.I told him I was starting a band.
His band needed a bass player,i was bored so i played, didn't
like it too much
so i showed him my music, we jammed,i liked his style. and he
introduced me to his bass player friend Raul. we rented studio
time in J.C. and impovised for an hour{great noise} and learned
"GO" a song that goes on and on. then they learned
the "dog song" and "so wonderful".
