The Rivera Chronicles - Story 3
"Vampires"

by Helen-Kylie

[An abandoned warehouse]

The darkness eerily played through the old warehouse, and not one drop of light radiated from anywhere. Slowly a small portal of greenish-yellow light began to form in a far corner, it grew larger and larger until it was big enough to step through. A figure stuck his head out of the portal and looked around, then cautiously stepped out and held his hand toward the portal. A hand reached out and accepted his hand and stepped out. The woman and man's figures seemed black against the green light that suddenly closed behind them. The girl seemed to be in her late teens, the man seemed the same age. The two looked almost exactly alike, except the girl had longer hair and was wearing a dress. It was too dark to see any more features on the two.

"Oh, Airncol!" the girl breathed. "We're back!"

The boy smiled. "Yes Moltanary, were back! So many people, like fast food on legs!"

"Three years in that awful place, and I'm hungry!" She said, it was clear the girl was insane from the way she spoke. She clung to the man, Airncol, and rested her head on his shoulder.

"Don't you worry, Moltanary, we find the slayer, and then you'll be cured."

"From what?" The girl, Moltanary, seemed to be acting like a small child, instead of a vampire about three hundred years old. Airncol smiled and looked at his sister, driven insane by the act of being turned into a vampire, three centuries ago. Only by her killing the slayer could she be delivered from her madness. Airncol lead her by the arm into the dark, they needed some fresh food before releasing the other vampires into the world.

[The firehouse, morning]

"Ha!" Cassy cried in delight, handing her game controller to Garrett. "Beat you again!" she giggled. Garrett frowned. Cassy leaned back so her head was in Garrett's lap. "Aww, big baby a sore loser!"

Garrett looked down at Cassy, her aqua eyes sparkling under the gray eye shadow and navy liner. He rolled back quickly so Cassy lost her balance, falling to the floor. Garrett watched her to see what she would do. She rolled onto her stomach, and propped her head up on her hand and looked up at him.

"Oh, you're going to pay for that!" she said, a smiled crossing her burgundy lips.

"Not in this lifetime, my fair lady!" he laughed. Cassy sprung up and grabbed a pillow. "Oh, no..." Garrett said as he turned and sped across the room, Cassy hot on his trail.

"Get back here, chaco!" she yelled.

Eduardo looked up from his magazine and chuckled. Cassandra, his cousin, had been with them for a month now and at least once a day, she and Garrett battled it out with words, pillows, and the occasional spraying with a shaken can of Pepsi. It was good to have someone around who could beat Garrett at almost everything, from poker to Nintendo to basketball. Kylie also enjoyed the company, she and Cassy would talk about everything from the latest movies to Astrology and Tarot. Cassy turned out to be just as obsessed with the paranormal as Kylie. Eduardo was just glad to have Cassy around again. She was his first and, for a long time, his only friend. He lost contact with her five years ago, after he moved to New York. Cassy was going to start college here when the summer was over. She planned to take gymnastics, sports medicine, forensic science, and of course Paranormal Phenomena 101.

Kylie entered the room, taking Eduardo from his thoughts. "Garrett and Cassy are 'fighting' again!" she said, listening to she sound of a heavy "thwack!" of a pillow, followed by the sound of Garrett swearing and Cassy laughing.

"Of course!" he smiled, looking at Kylie. "What else to do you think they would be doing?" Kylie laughed.

"That's become their hobby!" she said, walking behind him. She leaned down and kissed his neck. He raised his hand and ran his fingers through her black hair. She, in response, wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder. He turned his head and looked at her.

"What are you doing tonight?" he asked. She smiled.

"Nothing, as usual." she answered. She loved Eduardo dearly and always made sure she could be with him.

"Want to go to a movie? I think the new flick with James Van Der Beek is playing over at the multiplex."

"Love to!" she replied, kissing his cheek.

Over the past month they had grown so close, it was a miracle Garrett or Roland didn't notice. The only people who knew were Janine and Cassy. The miracle, they figured, was Cassy. She occupied most of Garrett's time, distracting him from his former hobby of sticking his nose where it didn't belong. Then again, Kylie and Eduardo were careful no one ever saw their intimate moments together.

RING!!!!~RING!!!!~RING!!!!

Janine picked up the phone, "Ghostbusters," she said lazily.

"HELP! MY FRIEND WAS JUST ATTACKED BY A VAMPIRE!" came the reply. Janine held the phone away from her ear, afraid the girl's voice would shatter her ear drum.

"Okay, calm down! Where are you?"

"The New York Memorial Hospital, I'm here with..." the girl sobbed, "Mandy, she's the one... the one who... who got attacked."

"Okay, are you sure it was a vampire?"

"OF COURSE IT WAS! IT BIT HER NECK!" Again Janine held the phone away from her ear.

"We'll be there in fifteen minutes," Janine said reassuringly.

"Thank you!" ~click~ Janine put down the receiver. She walked to the stairs and called out.

"Hey, we got a call!"

*****

[New York Memorial Hospital]

The EGBs had no trouble finding the girl who called, doctors were trying to hold her down and she was screaming hysterically, "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! IT WAS A VAMPIRE! I SWEAR!"

"Yes, yes a vampire..."

"I'M DAMN SERIOUS! A VAMPIRE! IT WAS A VAMPIRE, I TELL YOU!"

The five Ghostbusters exchanged looks. When the girl saw them, she broke free from the doctors and fell at the ghostbusters' feet. "You HAVE to believe me! It was a vampire!" she cried. She grabbed hold of Roland's suit tightly. "I swear it was a VAMPIRE!" Roland slowly pulled away from her grip. The five just stared at her. Kylie put her hand on the girl's shoulder.

"Tell us what happened," Kylie said gently.

Kylie looked at the blond-haired girl in the hospital bed. On her neck were two small puncture marks. The other girl, the hysterical one, finally was calmed and was now asleep in a chair. Eduardo stared at the girl in the bed, remembering that Kali wasn't so lucky when the paramedics got to her.

"Eduardo?" Kylie said, putting her hand on his shoulder.

"Huh? What?" Eduardo snapped out of his reverie.

"You're thinking about Kali again, aren't you?" Eduardo slowly nodded. "You can't keep blaming yourself, it wasn't your fault," she said soothingly.

"I know," he said quietly, "but I still feel remorse." Kylie could relate to that, she still felt awful about her Grandma Rose. Kylie leaned against Eduardo, who pulled her close, but when they heard Garrett's voice outside the door they jumped apart to a safe distance.

"Well, the doc confirmed it," Garrett said, entering the room, followed by Cassy and Roland. "She lost a lot of blood and there are no other cuts, not even SCRATCHES on her!"

"Well, I guess that means..." Cassy's sentence was cut short by a commotion in the hall.

The nurse yelled, "Get this man a blood bag, STAT!" The teens watched a man, unconscious, being wheeled up the hall in a stretcher.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN!" they heard a man screech, then looked down the hall at the doctor on the phone, "YOU'RE OUT OF BLOOD, TOO? THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS! WHAT AN OUTBREAK!"

The ghostbusters exchanged an 'oh-this-is-just-great' look.

[An alley]

A figure slipped up behind a woman who was taking a shortcut. He reached out and placed a hand over her mouth, and pulled her into the shadows...

[An abandoned warehouse]

Kylie entered the warehouse, holding out her PKE meter, which had sprung to life. "Well, this is where the trail leads," she said, pulling out her gun.

The others followed her example. A small, young girl appeared out of the shadows. The child smiled and beckoned to the ghostbusters. The PKE meters came to life again. "I think we found what we want," Kylie said.

"She's just a kid!" Cassy said, rather disappointed that it wasn't some huge, ugly, multi-limbed demon. The girl smiled sinisterly, her hair began to float up and her eyes began to glow green. She stretched out her hands to the five.

"Uh, guys. I don't like this!" Garrett whined, watching the girl, "The kid looks like Cassy when she's mad!" Cassy responded to Garrett's remark by whacking him on the head. Garrett still smiled.

The girl craned her neck over to the side so far you would swear she was trying to break it. The girl's figure dissolved into another, a blond-haired woman in a white, form-fitting dress. Her eyes still glowed. "I have a feeling we found the vampire!" Cassy grimaced.

The woman lifted her head into a normal position and turned towards the shadows. "Airncol?" she called into the dark in a British accent, "Is that you?" A new figure emerged from the shadows, a man dragging the body of a woman.

"It's me, Moltanary," he said. "Look, I brought you a treat."

"Oh goody!" she said, clapping her hands and running to Airncol, embracing the woman he had with him and sinking her teeth into the poor girl's neck.

"Oh, it appears we have company!" He sneered looking at the five teens.

"On three," Roland whispered.

"THREE!" they all cried, shooting at the man. He screamed in pain and Moltanary dropped the girl and watched in horror. Suddenly a portal appeared in the corner. When the portal appeared the guns instantly stopped.

"WHAT THE!?" Garrett yelled, shaking his gun.

"That portal, it's energy is counteracting our guns!" Roland said pointing at the portal.

Airncol bared his teeth and claws, ready to make quick meat out of the EGBs. Suddenly a girl rushed towards him, plowing him to the ground. Moltanary sprung up and faced the new girl. The girl pulled a stake from her belt and prepare to plug it in the male vampire's chest.

"NO!" Moltanary screeched.

Airncol sprung up quickly. "Slayer!" he breathed, "How good of you to come!"

"How NOT good of you to come back!" she taunted, swinging a powerful kick that landed between the man's ribs. He cried out in pain. He whispered something to Moltanary, who was now beside him. Moltanary jumped up and charged at the slayer. The EGBs tried to shoot again, but their guns still failed to work. Luckily, out of the shadows, another male charged, ramming Moltanary.

"Forgot about the slayer's apprentice, didn't ya!" the boy taunted.

"Thanks bro!" the girl said.

"Anytime, Sierra!"

Airncol got to his feet, pulled Moltanary up and ran into the darkness, pulling his sister behind him.

"Wow! That was one cool kick!" Cassy said to the slayer, Sierra.

"Thanks!" The girl responded. "I'm Sierra," she said, "I'm a vampire slayer."

"Like Buffy?" Eduardo asked, suprised.

"Only Buffy isn't real," the said happily, putting her stake back into her belt. She was probably about 17. "And this my cousin, Angelus," Sierra held a hand toward the boy who seemed about the same age.

"But you can call me Angel," he said, nodding his head in greeting.

"I'm Kylie," Kylie said, holding out her hand. Sierra shook it in greeting. "This is Eduardo, his cousin Cassy, Garrett, and Roland." Kylie pointed at them as she said their names.

"Pleased to meet you all!" Angel smiled, "I always hoped to meet the Extreme Ghostbusters!"

"Seriously?" Cassy said, delighted. Sierra nodded.

"Someone fighting to rid the world of ghosts, demons, and vamps! We can use allies!" she said enthusiastically.

"We just lost a very special ally..." Angel said and hung his head in sadness. Sierra cringed.

"To a vampire?" Eduardo asked. Angel's head shot up, he was obviously offended by the remark.

"Angel, he didn't know!" Sierra scolded before he got a chance to give Eduardo an earful. "She WAS a vampire." Sierra explained "But a good one..."

"Oh! Like Angel on Buffy!" Eduardo thought aloud.

"Yea, some idiot slayer who didn't research her history killed her!" Angel growled. Sierra looked at him, arched her eyebrow, then turned back to the others.

"She was his girl." Sierra said solemnly.

"Oh..." Kylie responded, thinking she would probably be just as bitter if Eduardo was killed by some ignorant person. Angel walked to the portal.

"Sierra, look!" Angel tapped her shoulder. Sierra looked at the portal.

"Move over, Sunnydale..." she muttered.

"What is it?" Cassy asked approaching the green, swirling light.

"A helmouth, gateway to hell itself." Sierra explained.

"Like as in Sunnydale library?" Garrett said, half amazed, half sarcastically.

"Why do people always have to compare things to that show..." Angel muttered. Suddenly a figure fell from the portal. The woman landed in Angel's arms "What the..." Angel turned the unconscious vampire over and gasped. The portal closed. The vampire's hand was cut down the middle. "Titara!" he whispered.

"She got out!" Sierra gasped, taking the vampire from his arms. "Do you guys have a place somewhere you work out of?" she asked Roland.

"Yea, a firehouse across..."

"Let's go!" Sierra said, heading for the door, carrying the woman.

"I'll assume this is the vampire you were talking about." Cassy sounded annoyed. Angel only nodded in response, Titara's return could only mean one thing...

*****

[The firehouse]

The vampire girl lay on the couch. She had come around but never moved. Angel sat by her and held her hand. The vampire only moved her eyes, following everyone's movements without moving her head. Even her eyes seemed lifeless, like there were clouds covering them. Sierra walked into the room. She held up a blood bag for everyone to see. "Titara, you better appreciate this! I had to swipe it from the hospital!" Sierra gave the bag to her brother. Angel held Titara upright. He carefully tore a small hole in the side and pressed it to Titara's lips. The vampire let the liquid pour into her mouth for a minute, before reaching up and taking hold of the bag. She took it from her mouth and from Angel's hands. She tilted her head to the side, bearing her sharp teeth, she sunk them into the bag and drunk greedily, till there was not a drop left.

Sierra and Angel watched unmoved, but Eduardo, Kylie, Cassy, Garrett, Roland, Egon and Janine couldn't help but stare. The vampire took the empty container from her lips and gave it to Sierra. The girl looked at everyone, then at Angel. She put her hand to his face and smiled. Angel put his arms around the girl, Eduardo could see he was crying.

"I thought you were gone! Oh Titara, I never thought I would see you again!" He cried. Titara put her arms arm his neck.

"Angel..." she said dreamily a faint old Irish accent, "MY Angel!" she kissed his cheek "Other world or no, it can't keep me away!".

"Sorry to interrupt the reunion," Sierra cut in, "But how did you get through?" Titara held up her hand, the one that was cut, only the cut had vanished. Kylie gasped. Her wounds could heal in a matter of minutes!

"Someone opened it," she said, "all I had to do was place vampire blood on the portal," she lowered her eyes. "I'll bet it's Airncol and Moltanary that did it!" Sierra nodded. Titara sighed "I can never win. My brother is lost!"

"WHAT!?" Garrett exclaimed "THAT GUY IN THE WAREHOUSE IS YOUR BROTHER!?" Titara nodded.

"And the girl is my sister, only she is messed up upstairs!" Titara illustrated by pointing to her head. "My brother became a vampire and felt alone, I guess. When she was still alive, Moltanary was very ill and suffered from hallucinations. When Airncol turned her into a vampire and took her soul away, it drove her insane."

"Took her soul away?" Roland asked. Sierra nodded.

"When a person is changed into a vampire, their soul is taken so they are pure demon. Everything physical about the person will never change. Their hair can't be cut, it will grow back instantly. If the person wore make-up the color will never EVER fade." Sierra explained. "See how Titara's lips and eyes are," everyone looked at Titara, her lips were deep plum and she appeared to have gray eye shadow on. "That color will never disappear!"

"It hasn't bugged in three hundred years!" Titara pressed her finger to her lips. "The thing with me is that I was completely innocent when I was changed, so my soul couldn't be taken! So I'm just a normal-type person, who will live forever and needs blood to mantain energy. I even had a mortal child, only she died of the black plague." Titara sighed. Her daughter was the only thing besides Angel she had ever loved in her vampire years, and she was gone.

Eduardo took a good look at the vampire girl. In fact she was very lovely. She was about Cassy's height and had a slim figure. Her hair was ash blond and had a tendency for a few locks to fall across her face, but those few strands seemed to make her more beautiful. Her eyes were a sparkling aqua-gray and shined brightly, abnormally bright. She was wearing tight brown leather pants and a long-sleeved crop-top. Titara really did look like a vampire, mysterious. But in Eduardo's mind, no one was as mysterious, radiant and gorgeous as Kylie.

Titara was Angel's girl, and that was quite clear. He held her close, protecting her from some unknown force that wasn't there. They whispered back and forth, words no one else could hear. It disgusted Cassy, she wasn't one for PDAs, public displays of affection.

Sierra, as far as appearance went, had a striking resemblance to Sarah Michelle Geller, except for the fact that her hair was a creamy chocolate brown and was cut in two layers. One layer framed her face, the other brushed her shoulders.

Angel was very similar to his sister, the same facial features and striking brown eyes. The only major difference was, Angel had thick blonde hair cut in a mushroom cut and long bangs that covered his forehead.

"I would just LOVE to stick around and watch this TOUCHING family reunion..." Cassy said, her voice dripping with sarcasm, "But your brother and mental-age-of-eight sister are running around New York City sucking the life's blood out of... what?... about twenty people an hour?!"

Sierra shrugged. "They won't hurt them...much, they like variety. It's when they release the OTHERS that we need to worry."

"OTHERS?!" Egon, Janine, Roland, Garrett, Eduardo and Kylie said in unison.

"Do you think they would work so hard to get free if they weren't out to destroy the world?!" Angel spoke matter-of-factly.

"I guess not..." Janine trailed off.

"LET'S GET OURSELVES SOME VAMPIRES!" Garrett cried, rolling to the elevator.

"Look out..." Cassy mumbled.

"...Brooklyn heights is in the house." she and Eduardo snickered together.

"Huh?" Angel said rising.

"It's an old family joke!" Kylie laughed.

*****

[The old warehouse]

"Airncol, look at them all!" Moltanary breathed from a top the catwalk.

"I know!" Airncol replied, watching a few more vampires jump out of the helmouth. He smiled down on the two dozen vampires that had already congregated. "We have enough." he said. "Close, gate to the underworld, forever!" The portal of light closed, permanently.

The ghostbusters came charging through the door, Sierra, Angel and Titara right behind. They stopped short at the sight of almost 25 red-eyed vampires.

"What are we going to do? We don't have this many traps!" Kylie screeched.

"We kill 'em." Sierra responded, throwing a powerful kick into the wall. The wood splintered into a dozen sharp pieces. "Grab a stake, we're going slayin'!" she said, picking up a piece of the sharp wood from the floor. "Titara, GO!"

Titara pushed past the others till she was in front, facing the vampires. She made her hands into fists and flicked her fingers out suddenly, making long, sharp claws appear. She closed her eyes for a second and when they shot open, they glowed blood red. Titara pulled back her head and growled, or roared, or a cross between the two. She sprung at the closest vampire and pulled him to the ground. Then she held her clawed fingernails above her head and brought them down across the vampire's neck. He screamed in pain. Titara sprung up and went after another vamp. Kylie grabbed a stake from the floor and just as the vampire's neck was about to heal over, she jabbed him right in the chest. He disintegrated. The other EGBs just looked at each other and shrugged before grabbing a stake and joining in.

"WA-HOO!!" Garrett yelled as he slammed his wheelchair into another vampire. The vampire shrieked as he hit the ground. "Look at me, I'm a monster truck!" he called as he rolled over the vamp again and the vampire screamed. Garrett slammed a stake into the vampire's back. The vampire turned to dust.

Cassy, on the other hand, was using a more street-wise method, as opposed to Garrett's playfulness. In one powerful move she swung around and landed her heel in between a vampire's ribs. The female vampire gasped as she was knocked back. Cassy landed another kick, square into the vampire's stomach, plowing the vampire into the wall. Cassy hurled her stake into the vampire's chest. The vampire girl gave a stifled cry of pain before exploding into a cloud of dust.

Eduardo saw two vampires running at him at the same time. "Oh no," he muttered as he saw them both coming at him from opposite sides. He quickly ducked, so the vampires hit each other, falling to the floor. Eduardo jumped up and stabbed one with a stake. The other, a girl, looked at him and rolled her eyes.

"I suppose you're a slayer wannabe?"

"Nope," he grinned, "I'm a scientist, man!" he thrust his stake into the vampire's chest. Her scream faded as she disintegrated.

Titara ran up the stairs and onto the catwalk. When she saw her brother and sister, the bloody color left her eyes. "Airncol..." she muttered contemptuously.

"Titara!" He gushed, "So good to see you!"

"Save it!" She snapped.

"Titara!" Moltanary cried happily in her childish voice, "I knew you would come, you can't keep away from Angel! He's all you have now!"

"Shut up!" Titara screamed.

"Ah, so you do remember." Airncol growled.

"How could I forget?" she roared, the bloody color returning.

"Momma?" a small voice cried out from behind Airncol. Moltanary pulled forth a small girl.

"Morgan!" Titara gasped, the blood color instantly leaving. Though with her Irish accent, it sound more like "Margen".

"Mommy!" The girl cried, trying to run to Titara, only to find herself held back by Moltanary's grip on her arm. "Let me go! MOMMY!"

"LET HER GO!!" Titara demanded.

"Only if you give me the slayer!"

"I would NEVER betray Sierra!"

Airncol grabbed Morgan's arm and pulled her in front of him. He pulled out a stake and held it to Morgan's chest "Mommy..." the little girl trembled.

Titara stared, wide-eyed "You made her a..."

"A vampire, yes." Airncol hissed.

"You turned her into a creature of the night! To save her, so you could get ME!"

"Better than when I saw her dead in a casket!"

"You had NO RIGHT to steal her body and make her a vampire!"

Moltanary looked sorrowfully confused. "But I thought Morgan still had her soul even thought she was a vampire, because she was innocent?"

"SHUT UP!" Airncol roared.

"She has a soul!" Titara breathed, "Like me!"

Suddenly Airncol screeched in pain and stumbled forward, letting go of Morgan. The girl ran to Titara. Titara scooped Morgan up in her arms and held her tightly. Moltanary ran to Airncol. "Airncol what is it? Blood!" she screeched when she saw the rip in his shirt and the red liquid oozing through it.

"Silver knife!" Sierra said, proudly holding a blood stained knife. "On a vampire the wound won't heal!" The EGBs and Angel stood behind her.

Kylie walked up behind Moltanary. Moltanary turned to her and whispered, "Do you have a stake?" Kylie nodded, holding up the piece of wood. Moltanary pointed to her chest. "Kill me." Kylie looked surprised.

"You want me to kill you?"

"She is insane, Kylie." Sierra reminded her. "I remember several times she tried to use a stake to kill herself."

"Just kill her!" Angel said, exasperated. Kylie shrugged and thrust the stake into Montanary's chest.

"MOLTANARY!" Airncol screamed.

"You, my friend, have a one way ticket..." Cassy declared as she took a trap off Kylie's back. "To the containment unit!" She pressed the button on the side of the trap.

"NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!" Airncol screamed as he was pulled into the vortex of light and the trap snapped shut.

[The Firehouse]

"Good-luck!" Cassy said, shaking Sierra's hand.

"You, too!"

"See you 'round bro!" Garrett said, as Angel shook his hand.

"Likewise!"

"Drop us a line sometime!" Kylie said to Titara.

"I'll send you a postcard!" The vampire laughed.

"Wheee!!!" Morgan called out from atop Roland's shoulders.

"Hey man, it's time for the chiquita to go!" Eduardo said, lifting Morgan from Roland's shoulders.

Sierra, Angel, Titara and Morgan all headed out the door.

"Bye! And thanks again!"

"Anytime!" Janine called.

"That is one weird family!" Kylie exclaimed as the four went out of sight, "but it's a happy one!"

"Now that they're rid of the family freak-show!" Eduardo laughed. All the others joined in.

LATER:

Eduardo watched Kylie deal out the tarot deck. "What does that mean?" He asked pointing to a card.

"It means my inner self."

"So what does it tell you?"

"The mystery woman," Kylie recited, "Mysterious, attractive and has a great inner strength. Nurturing, loving, passionate and caring, sensitive to others' needs. Indifferent, but is deeply emotional. Has hidden deep feelings, dreams and fantasies!" she looked at the card.

"Fits the profile!" Eduardo said. "You still up for that movie?"

"Yeah, let's..." Kylie's sentence was cut short by a loud crash, and a panic-stricken Garrett rolled out of the elevator. Cassy slid down the firepole.

"GET BACK HERE AND FIGHT LIKE A MAN!" Cassy screamed as Garrett raced out the door and down the street, Cassy hot on his trail.

"Remind you of anyone?" Kylie asked as a pair of arms wrapped loosely around her. Eduardo nodded. Kylie smiled and leaned back into the warm body behind her. "Now, about that movie...bet you couldn't race me to the cinema!" she laughed, pulling away and racing out the front door.

Eduardo laughed. "You KNOW you can't outrun me!" He laughed as he grabbed his wallet and ran after her...
