Our Story
It all started August of '97. Southern Lehigh's marching band was beginning to
meet for band camp. Dale, Michele, Nate, and Ian were all freshman. Dan Travis
were Sophomores, in their second year of marching band. Dale and Dan were both
playing drums, and became friends there. Travis and Nate both were playing
saxophone, and they got to know each other there. Later in the year, in mid-October, Dan and Dale were talking about making a ska band. Dan could play
guitar, Dale could play drums, and Travis could play saxophone. They asked Ian to
play trumpet, and Michele to play trombone. Dan and Dale were standing in line
waiting to get a cup of hot chocolate at a band competition on a frigid November
night. Nate was standing behind them, singing a little ska tune. They turned
around and asked him if he wanted to sing in their ska band. Nate, thinking this
was all a joke, said "SURE!" Dan knew a kid by the name of Billy who could play
bass. So one Saturday they got together in Dale's basement. They started out
covering songs by other bands, namely The Supertones. Then Nate wrote some
words, and they put music to it. The first few weeks were rough - just ask Dale's
mom. But they were getting there... In December, Ian and Billy left the band, but
the rest of the band kept on writing. By Christmas break they had 3 of their own
songs, and a cover. The parents were curious as to what they were doing, so they
had a little shindig one night over Christmas break. All the families came over, had
a little food, and listened to the band play. They struggled through their first show.
In April of '98 the band was planning on playing a show at Nate's youth group.
They were going to play bassless, but they asked Nathan Moyer to play bass for
them at the last minute. He came and made stuff up on the spot, and has been
with the band ever since. They have continued writing songs and playing concerts
since then.
...and that, is the story of The Dialtones.
