Rock Falls

Rocky Mount Falls

Tar River at flood stage at Rocky Mount Falls/Mills. Site of one of the first textile plants in the South.

Rocky Mount Mill

Falls with the old textile grist mill in the background. In 1818, it was the first cotton mill established in NC. (Rocky Mount, NC)

Another view of the mill. It was destroyed during the Civil War and rebuilt in 1865. Destroyed by fire in 1869, and rebuilt again in 1870.

Neuse River Bay

Neuse River at Stately Pines. (Havelock/Carolina Pines) Site of numerous agal blooms, Pfiesteria outbreaks, and massive fish kills. NC has 9.6 million hogs, 2nd only to Iowa and many waste lagoons.

Frozen Neuse

Neuse river frozen almost all the way across. Here, it is over 2 miles across from near Flanners Beach to Kennel Beach on the opposite shore. (Christmas blizzard winter storm of 1989)

Town Creek

Tree stumps along Town Creek, a Tar River tributary. This stream has a variety of wildlife and lack of development. It can be navigated by canoe during higher water levels.

Meandering Town Creek has an abundance of wildlife, including wild turkey, deer, otters and many snakes. (Old Sparta, NC)

Swift Creek

Swift Creek has 60 types of freshwater fish, 7 species of crayfish, 30 varieties of freshwater mussels & snails.

Pristine waters of Swift Creek provides habitat for 2 endangered species of mussels.
