Denny Doherty

Canadian Denny Doherty was born under the name Dennis in 1941. Denny was a memeber of the folk group The Halifax Three. He, like most of the other people of the times, went to New York because that was the music/art/hangout scene. He and his friend Zal (Yanovsky) met Cass Elliot there and became part of her group, The Mugwumps. Denny became fast and close friends with Cass, and kinda realized that she had a major thing for him.

The Mugwumps fell apart, and in 1964 Denny and his "rich silky tenor" voice caught the attention of John Phillips. John asked Denny to join his group, The New Journeymen. Denny did, and he John and John's wife Michelle performed together in the folk scene.

Denny knew the folk scene was going nowhere and he got John into the new sound--the Beatles. The group decided to take a break from all the folk and traveled to St. Thomas. The three became extremely close emotionally and musically. They got closer when Cass showed up. Denny still couldn't quite see that Cass wanted him....badly!

Trouble began brewing on the island, and soon Denny had a thing for Michelle. A big thing. It started out as a friendship-everone else is stoned-let's go smoke a joint relationship. Then one night, while everyone was stoned, Denny slept with Michelle. It provided creative inspiration for John, but it would ultimately provide the love triangle that broke up the group.

The group left St. Thomas and got a shot with producer Lou Adler. As you know, The Mamas and Papas were born and had mega big success. Denny led most of the songs, and did a really good job. But, it was short lived, because the deceits from the past ended it all.

Shortly after the breakup, Cass gave Denny one last chance to be with her by proposing to him. Denny was trying to get Michelle out of his life, and still didn't get it, so he told Cass no. Cass left with no regrets, but Denny was regretful when he found out about her death, and the lies spread about it.

Denny joined John in 1981 from 1987 in the New Mamas and Papas. Now, he occasionally perfoms his tribute to Cass. He also stars as the Harbor Master in the PBS kids show Theodore Tugboat. (Does a good job, if I say so myself :)
