Ok, there was Sonny and Cher the actors...but first there was Sonny and Cher the musicians. No one could deny that Sonny was talented. In the beginning, Sonny only knew about 3 chords on the piano. He composed "The Beat Goes On" from that little know how!
Sonny and Cher burst onto the scene in 1965 and everyone was talking about them...well, mainly their wacky psychedelic wardrobe. (MONKEES CONNECTION: The Monkees borrowed the fur vest look in their debut episode from Sonny...Oh, and Mike Nesmith's dog Frak bit Sonny and Cher. Eep!) But, critics praised their groovin' tunes and their groovin' music. Fans couldn't either.
It wasn't easy getting to the top. Early in their careers, y'know, during the time when they called themselves Caesar and Cleo, California DJ Casey Kasem arranged for them to play at a roller rink. Only 6 (i think) people showed up. Six in a HUGE roller rink. Casey told the couple they didn't have to play....but Sonny and Cher gave it their all, which one the respect of Mr. Kasem.
When their first wave of success washed up at the beach, the couple was broke (because of their clothing line failure and movie bomb :( )To get them back into the swing of things (and money), Sonny arranged for them to play several gigs at Vegas night clubs. Cher hated it, but she went on with Sonny anyway. It was on those gigs that Sonny and Cher developed their "chemistry" that would bring them future success as actors/comedians.
