Except for a post-high school year in Israel, Debra Winger has stayed near Hollywood ever since. A nearly fatal 1973 automobile accident inspired her to devote herself to acting, and her determination has paid off with a career that is diverse rather than glamorous, eccentric instead of predictable.
As her demanding new movie suggests, Winger has no compunction about making herself seem strange, weird, difficult to like. Anything but a movie star.
The results have been spotty but challenging. Even her failed films are good.
