There is the Eraserheads. 1989...four college guys...second hand instruments ...University of the Philippines... desire to catch the attention of girls on campus... own songs with unconventional themes...these are the elements that helped form the band Eraserheads. |

They played at every University gig they could get into for more than a year. They played wherever they where invited or not invited even with applause as their only compensation. They set their sights outside campus in search of paying gigs. They auditioned at Mayric's in Manila and at Anthem in Tandang Sora but were turned down. The group wasn't very good because they often lacked practice, which was usually done in Raymund's room a few minutes before their gigs. Also, their second-hand equipment were lousy. They also realized that they weren't good at belting out other people's songs. |

They finally decided to write their own songs. This meant that they could play anywhere they wanted and still sound competent. They started doing these songs live and developed a cult following on campus and throughout the metropolis. They became notorious for their song "Pare Ko" which was already being covered by other bands even before it got recorded. The cheers they received anywhere thay went gave them enough confidence to record a demo in a garage in Candelaria, Quezon. They approached radio stations and were turned down. They held on against the depression, and the demo was later |
rave-reviewed in the UP Philppine Collegian. A UP professor, having read the article, helped them record a better demo, which they called POP-U in deference to those who turned them down, for free. They were accepted as a regular band at the now defuct but legendary Club Dredd. And the demo went around and a year later fell into the hands of BMG. |
