The
follow-up to the highly successful "The Divine Wings of Tragedy", which is
considered by some as the best CD of the year. Symphony X had a hard time trying to
overcome the expectations of the fans after "Divine", but I think they had done
well with "Twilight in Olympus". The album opens with the recognizable trademark
song that Symphony X are known for. "Smoke & Mirrors" is an excellent
composition, credits to Romeo and Miller. The new drummer by the name of Tom Walling fits
real well with the band. Occasionally sounding similar to previous skin-beater, Jason
Rullo. Russell Allen never cease to amaze with his wonderful vocals on each and every
song. Even his choirs arrangements are excellent. Although
Symphony X is considered to be more on the progressive side, the metal influence is pretty
obvious in tracks like "Smoke & Mirrors" and "In the Dragon's
Den". "Through the Looking Glass" is another excellent 13 minutes piece,
illustrating Symphony X's musical talent at it's highest level. Odd-timing tempo, timely
breaks and of course, the golden voice of Russell.
Nothing short of "Divine", Symphony X continues
to produce marvelous work with "Twilight". The only drawback is that the
duration of this album is much shorter. If you like your metal with a touch of progressive
magic, Symphony X is the band. Bravo proggers!!! |
