Letter from Maureen

The Mercury Phoenix Trust

"Hi everyone,

"I cannot believe how quickly this year is going. Our third campaign is already here. I feel quite confident that 1996 has been a good year for the Mercury Phoenix Trust Collection. New people have joined us and many have been raising money all through the year. Our main event was a benefit concert which took place in London, in November.

"It's been a special year for QUEEN. The fifth anniversary of Freddie's death and also his fiftieth birthday. It's a good time to hold an event such as this, hoping that it will be the first of many. It was, in fact, so successful that one of the bands, The Bohemians, played again the following week at the Shepherds Bush Empire, the venue for Queen's first ever television appearanc, when they performed 'Killer Queen' on 'Top Of The Pops' in October 1974, when the Empire was still known as the BBC Television Theatre. We feel that it is important enough to have an annual event to bring people together with music. Also to promote awareness that is still so crucial. Even though it no longer makes headline news, the virus is still at work destroying so many people's lives.

"There are so many HIV/AIDS charities and organisations that are having to close down through lack of funding. This makes me all the more determined to continue to do what I can in whichever way possible.

"In the past two years we have had Street Collections in the UK, also in the Metropolitan area of London. It has proved to be the hardest way to raise money and very difficult to establish an area that isn't already covered. It takes a lot of work, time and energy. In some areas we have been lucky to get enough people to do Street Collections. Other people find it difficult to get volunteers. A couple of hours of anyone's time is all that is needed. Jackie Colling needs volunteers for the London collections. More people means more money.

"We are building up the name and reputation of the Mercury Phoenix Trust quietly and slowly and in time bigger and better things will happen. We just have to be patient.

"Let us continue to work under the name of the Trust that we are all so proud of.

"Thank you all for staying with us. Here's to an excellent campaign!

"All my love,

"Maureen
