Big Butter and Egg Man

Louis Armstrong, and P. Venables

Now she wants...a butter an egg man
From way out in the West
She wants somebody...who's workin' all day
So she's got money...when she wants to play

Now pretty clothes...they'll never be mine
But what she told me the other day
I hope she don't change her mind
Now she wants...a butter an egg man
A great big butter and egg man
From way down South

This song was performed chiefly as an instrumental, allowing each
instrumentalist his turn to "shine". The melody of this tune yields
itself well to the high piercing tones Louis was able to achieve with
his horn. It also affords one the opportunity to hear Louis' famous
'scat' singing. The song was first recorded with the 'Hot Five' band
on November 16, 1926. On May 17, 1947 Louis made his first
recording with his All Stars 'Live at Town Hall' in New York City,
and this was one of the songs. He recorded it again in 1951 with
The Gordon Jenkin's Orchestra.
