The Homemade Tube Audio Primer: Preamps and amplifiers

© 1993 J.C. Morrison

The purpose of this pamphlet is to provide a serious introduction to vacuum tube audio circuits. Some familiarity with electronics and reading schematics is required to make use of this collection. Do not expect a complete explanation on how to construct these circuits. You are the one that decideb how to do it! Each design has been proven by audio fanatics and general tinkerers, both locally and from all around the world. As a result, a great deal of refinement and high performance can be expected from all of them. However, most of these circuits are simple, and are well within the grasp of the ambitious beginner. Those with some experience will also gain from the various design methodologies implemented in this collection, as they are as cleverly engineered as they are simple.

The five sections, which comprise this pamphlet, are organized in the following manner:

  1. Preamps
  2. Single-ended Amplifiers
  3. Push-pull Amplifiers
  4. Sources
  5. Appendix
This represents two preamps, four single-ended amplifiers and four push-pull amplifiers, inclusive of a parts index (suppliers) and an appendix containing explanatory information and general construction advice.

I cannot encourage you enough to try your hand at making your own hi-fi equipment. Besides the obvious delights of vacuum tube audio, there is nothing quite like the moment your construction starts to make music. This is something that those "little black boxes" can never do, no matter whose name is on it. In addition, careful implementation of vacuum tube technology does sound better than most of what the consumer electronics industry likes to call "high-end". The last notion I'd like to leave you with is that almost anyone can build tube audio equipment. The only prerequisites are patience and the desire to learn. This pamphlet will provide enough basic information to get started making something and the projects are excellent sounding designs. Enjoy!
