We taped aud the whole night on 12/31, and the tapes aren't too shabby. I was gonna do sbd when JohnO announced the patch, but just said screw it and used the Nak cm100's instead. They sound pretty decent considering the shitty sound in the Kezar....Great venue/vibe/staff, but BAD sound! If the baords suck, then a tree might be in order for 12/31...I'll wait for reviews before I do that though!) Hope everybody had a smashing New Year! It's a basketball gym and there's lots of metal echoing. It was a big dilema trying to decide which show to go to that night. I thought it was incredibly great and glad I picked that one, but in the future, I'll pass on Kezar for music. Suggest you get your tickets early for the Mystic in Petaluma, it's not very big and should sell out fast. It's the night after the Catalyst. First Sipe show I saw was at HORDE in Live Oak, FL, and I was very unimpressed, but since he was new and figured it would take a while to work out the kinks. He seemed to not know the changes very well. Since then he has got the changes down, but still I think his drum work is at times inappropriate to the music. I was open minded about the switch but I do think it has brought the sound down. He just isn't as tight, and uses the cymbals, especially the crash, too much, at least at the shows I've seen with him. I do know that I have been less than blown away the past couple of shows I've seen, unlike the ones before. I do agree that their sound has changed some since the pre-Sipe days, but I also think they have been pretty stagnant in the past year, not very many new songs, heavy overplaying of some songs. I feel like I know what I am going to get at a Salmon show these days, there seems to be less craziness and more straightforward playing. I don't mean to sound so down on the band, they are really incredible, and produce moments that are unrivaled by anyone as far as music goes, and I haven't seen them since October. I do think things will pick up once they stop pushing Euphoria so much. I'm sorry it got so out of date. Some sort of list format change (or a mail server config change somewhere between me and the list server) broke my "archive processes" somewhere around 10/19/97. The result is that I had to do some fancy MS-Exchange -> SMTP forwarding and looping to get each digest into a format suitable for archiving and even now there's an odd word-wrap in many of the fall 97 digests. Yuk. Anyway, the archive is available via http://world.std.com/~pmc and has digests from this group going back to 2/23/97. Digests #417 through #807 (12/29/97) are present -- that's 80 digests. If anyone has older digests email me and we'll arrange to pop them up onto the server. I don't want individual postings -- just digests. The server is a bit more stable now too -- it's in an unattended computer room, but I made some changes to keep it up through a power failure. While I'm here... I'm looking for DATs of Dylan at Boston's Avalon on 12/9/97 (or thereabouts) as well as the recent Dylan/Morrison Fleet Center performance. A friend is giddy over the possibility that she can get tapes of performances that she attended. I'm also looking to hook up as an after-the-fact DAT or D>A leaf on the Phish Vegas tree if anyone can help. Please Email me. Anyone notice that Euphoria is NOT listed on the official LoS web page? I bought my copy at a show but the only other place I can seem to find it is in the CDNOW catalog ($13.99). +---------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Patrick Chase pchase@g*nzyme.com (*=e) | | Network Manager pmc@world.std.com | | G*nzyme Corporation UUCP: uunet!world!pmc | | PO Box 9322 AOL: no longer active | | Framingham, MA 01701-9322 508/270-2184 (v) 508/872-1035 (fax)| +---------------------------------------------------------------------+ ------ =_NextPart_000_01BD1AEF.568F4DE0 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: "gweston@pacifier.com" To: "leftover@lists.colorado.edu" Subject: a few upcoming Leftover Salmon dates Date: Sun, 4 Jan 1998 04:32:08 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit As usual, the Leftover Salmon homepage is WAY behind schedule (well, not that far behind but the following are 3 weeks away!) and they are a bit behind in updating their Winter Tour Schedule. I wondered if they thought the show was that bad. :) Just thought I'd relate that while we're on the subject of popularity, etc. On to the new sound.... He seemed to not know the changes very well. I'd been a Sipe fan for a while before the "change", but when I heard he was replacing Woo I was a little apprehensive. The first show I saw with Sipe was Lake Boone in Raleigh 8/14?, and although I can't say I was "unimpressed" I did feel the difference. I too attributed it to being new, and the fact that playing with LoS is a LOT different than HL and S or ARU. >Since then he has got the changes down, but still I think his drum work is >at times inappropriate to the music. I really realized a difference even between that Lake Boone show and the Ziggy's show in September. I think the acoustic performance LoS gave the afternoon before the Ziggy's show did a good job of making me a Sipe fan again. I do think >things will pick up once they stop pushing Euphoria so much. > I would definently have to agree that the band has changed a lot in the past year. The February run in NC was where I first noticed it. They were heavily promoting Euphoria, I went to three nights, felt like I had been to one three times. Not that I didn't have a great time. Not that I love Leftover any less. But there is a big difference in the whole atmosphere of shows since the release of Euphoria. I'd say the only exception to this IMO would be the past three Ziggy's shows, in May and September. But the rest I've seen (about 7 others since February) have been repetitive and lacking the energy that used to be there. I haven't seen them since October either. I have attributed the changes to attempts to build fan base and promote the major label album. I hope that this settles down, and we go back to the days of ROAM and the sound of 1995-1996. Maybe the new year will bring it back a little. Sarah ------ =_NextPart_000_01BD1AEF.568F4DE0--
