Despite HOW CRUMMY THE VENUE is, their pickin' and a strummin' managed to help me have a good time. First off- who decided to make this a 16 and over show? No booze, no beer, no buds. (At least for the 6 or 7 hundred FANS) In fact, the Catalyst had BRIGHT ORANGE HIGHWAY BARRIERS to cordon off the venue from the bar. So, not only could you not have a beer while listening to music, but you had to fight AGAINST the crowd of people coming in, only to get to a 20 foot bar, with ZERO cocktail waitresses to serve the masses. LAME LAME LAME. I am proud to say that we were able to sneak in a six pack of Celebration Ale, and we left all empties in the middle of the floor for the A-HOLE CATALYST Security Jerks to pick up. Which brings me to my second, well- complaint. The CATALYST's A-HOLE Security Jerks. One in particular appeared to be a 50 year old, nazi like, ex- or wanna be cop, who liked shoving people around who were boogeying on the floor. Within oh about 10 feet of where we happened to be dancing, I saw him physically get into at least 6 different peoples faces all before or during the first set. One guy, he had in a headlock, and dragged him out the back door. He was an ASSHOLE. He took my buddies bag o' fun and said to him as he walked away, "THIS TIME I SMOKE IT. NEXT TIME I CALL THE COPS!" Please refresh my memory- what band did we drive two hours to come and see? Of course, when in the first set, the boys started to jam the 420 polka, I proceeded to, well, 420. Another "security" guy shoves me from behind, grabs my snodgrass and laughs at me as he walks away. WHAT GIVES??? Is there anyone out there that had similar experiences? I KNOW there has to be! Needless to say, we will NEVER go the Catalyst again, and I will do anything to dissuade people who are thinking of going there. To anyone affiliated with the Catalyst, a big ONE FINGER SALUTE! I hope you guys get off on shoving hippies around. If anyone out there has anything to do with the band, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE never book this venue again- it is SO unkind. I'd much rather catch 'em at the Fillmore like last february. Again, thank you for playing for us- like I said, despite the venue, the music was much appreciated. Jim Page's Santa Cruz Blues was smokin'! as was Bettah, The Bridge, and Euphoria! If you've made it this far, I apologize for the rant and consumption of bandwidth. To offset this, I will gladly offer up kind DSBD D>A tapes of this show (1/30/98 @ The Catalyst) to the first three people to email me. The Catalyst show really smoked, aside from the fact that the venue personnel suck. The Mystic show wasn't bad (killer venue), but I felt like it was a repeat of the night before. I've never seen LoS 2 nights in a row before, except at the HSMF, so maybe this is somewhat common, but I expected the shows to be markedly different. Here's some of the songs they played both nights: -Bend in the River -Mama Boulet -Euphoria -Zombie Jamboree -Jokester -Wake and Bake -Better -Funky Mtn Fogdown -Do the Boogie I think there was maybe another song or two they played both nights, but this is all that comes to mind. The venues were about 2:30 minutes away, which isn't that far. I guess I just figured we'd get more variety. Can some of you longtime LoSers let me know if this is common. Anyway, I'm glad I got to see the boys again and I hope to see them again soon. I've got a suggestion. How about booking the Fillmore next time with Pete Sears again. I agree. There were quite a few repeats. I have seen many LoS show runs, in the Bay Area, HSF, and can say that so many repeats is *not* the norm, although you usually get 2 or 3. However, IMHO, I thought the Mystic show was FAR BETTER than the Catalyst. This is venue and security jerks aside.... I'm talking straight music, crowd energy, and band energy. It's really a bummer to see the changes in the Catalyst over the past few years. I don't know if this is due to new management, etc., but it has *not* changed for the better. First saw LoS at the "Psychedelic Ball" at the Catalyst in 94 (or was that 95?). This is still one of my favorite shows (non HSF), most requested LoS tape from my list, and at the time it was one of my fav venues. Most of the crowd was indeed psychadelic, and it lived up to it's name.... great energy, bodies dancing everywhere. An acquaintance of mine even climbed up on stage during the Jamaby set, and looked around... no-one hasseled him, he just smiled, and climbed back down. Jambay started singing about him mid-tune (he was wearing a number 30 shirt, if anyone has the tapes). No way that could have happened at this show!!! The dudes taking the tickets before we even got in were totally rude. "Hey move along", "Get the hell out of my way", "Got your tix, then move it" banter. If they were trying to be funny, they failed miserably. There was security walking everwhere looking for folks to bust. Although I got caught, I was warned... nothing confiscated. (phew! it wasn't mine) Although I did hear about a lot of people loosing paraphernalia to the security. :( >Here's some of the songs they >played both nights: >-Bend in the River >-Mama Boulet >-Euphoria >-Zombie Jamboree >-Jokester >-Wake and Bake >-Better >-Funky Mtn Fogdown >-Do the Boogie I missed the first 2-3 songs at the Catalyst, so I thought there were less repeats. I thought they were all better at Mystic tho. LoS had more energy, seemed to punch the songs out better, and I thought the crowd was more receptive. This (repeats) has been a common complaint about the Boyz for a few months now. All of the Euphoria songs are in HEAVY rotation. (hmm... I recall reading of this problem w/the Dead in those last years) probably due to more media exposure, new album, etc. But considering their song repertoire, they don't need to play them all each night! They do Wake/Bake almost every show close, (signature thing) so you shouldn't really count that as a repeat. I know I've been bummed when they didn't do it at show close. (sometimes the crowd does it for them). >Anyway, I'm glad I got to see the boys again and I hope to see them >again soon. Probably not until HSF. (get your tix early-can't say enough about this place with or without LOS there) >I've got a suggestion. How about booking the Fillmore next time with >Pete Sears again. And Paul McCandless. Too much fun. Although I was glad the Lesh/Gans thing was going on at the Fillmore on Saturday, otherwise we might not of gotten tickets to the Mystic. Didn't see one...I have most of the Catalyst setlist but didn't bring it w/ me to work today so I'll post it later. Catalyst security are *jerks*, but I knew and expected this going into Friday's show...First off I liked not having beer sales inside the show. Younger kids can come in which is a good thing. Also, w/o alcohol sales in the hall I think people generally listen a lot closer to the music, and don't end up socializing, spilling, or waiting for a drink by the bar. I thought the Catalyst crowd was great. Everyone seemed to be really listening to the solos and erupting w/ applause and hoots. I didn't hear/see this happening much at all the next night at the Mystic. Got to meet Mark on the way in and give him a few packs of Andy Griffith trading cards I brought as a present for the boys. He got a kick out of 'em and we spent some time going through them and laughing. I requested Dark Side of the Moon (often labeled 'Brain Damage'), and they opened up 2nd set w/ it. Like a dumb ass I was in the bar still and missed it (Please, everyone-never choose alcohol over music). Big bummer but all my friends knew I had asked for it and were stoked. Mystic is nice venue w/ great sound and a pretty friendly staff. Drew was on fire as usual and the guest percussionist was a nice treat...but most of it felt like a rerun of the night before.
