SOUNDBOARD: Improvised & Experimental Music is a bimonthly magazine dedicated to documenting and supporting jam bands to avant-garde jazz in the Northeast and beyond. We're available free in live music venues and indy record stores throughout the region, and sold in Tower Records and other retail outlets coast-to-coast.Both cutting edge artists and living legends from a variety of American musical traditions are highlighted in exclusive interviews and in-depth articles. The new March/April issue features a report on the left coast groove of the GREYBOY ALL-STARS, editor Pete Gershon's interview with mandolin legend DAVID GRISMAN and a Q&A with music writer BYRON COLEY on the experimental jazz label he recently formed with Thurston Moore. March to the beat of three different drummers when we talk with bop legend ROY HAYNES, Boston's BOB GULLOTTI, and the ubiquitous GREGG BENDIAN. Plus you can expect the usual live reviews, cd reviews, the scoop on the Northeast's best clubs and record stores, grassroots news and views and more! We're also busy putting together our first compilation disc! SOUNDBOARD MASTERS, VOLUME ONE: THE BURLINGTON JAZZ SCENE will be released in early April, and will come free with a year's subscription to SOUNDBOARD. We've assembled dutifully and digitally recorded, never-before-released live tracks by the JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT, the GORDON STONE TRIO with guest GABE JARRETT, STACY STARKWEATHER'S OPTION ANXIETY, the JAMES HARVEY QUINTET, VIPERHOUSE, FREEFALL and I'M BIG & I CAN DIG. SOUNDBOARD aims to cover the improvisational music scene in the Northeast and beyond, but we consider ourselves lucky to live amongst some great musicians here in Burlington, and we want you to be able to hear these incredible performances no matter where you are! If you subscribe to SOUNDBOARD, it'll come with your May issue. You can't get it any other way! We're now reserving ad space for the May/June issue. With articles on MEDESKI, MARTIN & WOOD, JOHN SCOFIELD & CHARLIE HUNTER in the works, it should be one of our most popular issues yet! If you're a band, a indy label, or a venue which presents this vital music, we can help you reach thousands of eager listeners! Give us a call for rates and info at the number below. Subscriptions are $12 for six bimonthly issues, plus the FREE CD! Sample and back issues are available for $2.50 each, ppd. Here's the scoop for one and all: Telluride Town Park camping sold out in four days back in November. This is the prime realestate located immediately next to the festival grounds. >From Town Park, you can hear the bands from your tent...leading to some nice afternoon naps ;) Festival tickets are still available for $135. Single Day tickets will go on sale around Apr 1 if you only want a day or two of the Festival. Be wrned though, this is the 25th Anniversary Festival, and demand for 4-day tickets will be HIGH, so single day tickets will be hard to come by. There are several other campgrounds on the other end of town. In my personal order of preference it would be: Mill Creek, Brewer's Park, and Ilium. Camping passes will be available for these campgrounds in April as well. From these cmapgrounds, you can easily hop a shuttle bus or ride your bike into the festival...the busses run all day and late into the night to get you home. The last campground is Ilium, which is down valley some. I have no experience with it other than driving through it once. Once you have a camping permit, all campgrounds are first-come, first-served. The best sites are the ones upwind from the port-o-jons and far enough away that you can't hear the doors slamming all night, and in the shade so the sun doesn't cook youawake at 6:30 AM. The worst sites are next to the port-o-jons in the baking sun. You can check www.bluegrass.com for all the latest information. latest rumor that flew my way was that Bruce Hornsby would be performing with Bela Fleck. I'm not putting any substance to that one until it's confirmed! (Jo?) As others have noted, however, I was a bit "put off" by the scene inside. I've never seen so many young (14-17 years) people at a show. It's not that I have something against anyone in this age category, it's just that it seemed to me that most of these folks were there and were so fu@?#ed up that they didn't even pay attention to what they should have been there to see and hear. The place only holds about 1000 people and the manager told me they sold over 1400 tix. It was extremely crowded and what made matters even worse were the people who were there just to have some place to "do drugs at" as I overheard one girl saying. I certainly don't have anything against certain substances either...it's just that I hope this is not what the LoS scene is heading for. I really don't want to sound bitter about the show because overall, I had a great time. It's just that I've watched the Phish scene go this route over the last 3 years or so and I hope our boys don't end up in the same rut. Does anyone who was at the show have these same sentiments? Have other shows on this tour been the same way? Any feedback sent either to the list or me personally would be appreciated. Chris I'm hoping to have a copy of the show soon and will offer it up to the list as soon as I can. ************************************************************************ **** 0ooo.
