Thanks, Steve. Well. That is a very good question. Lemme see, here's how I've heard it told (by several sources, so sorry if the chronology is somewhat mixed up). Let's hope the statute of limitations has run out. 1984: Kahlie rescues the Mayor from a condemned McDonalds somewhere near Bakersfield. 1989: Leftover Salmon starts playing as Leftover Salmon. 1992?: Kahlie gives Mayor to Leftover Salmon as a gift. The Mayor watches over Salmonland, omnipotent and Buddha-like. 1993: The Mayor is stolen. 1994: The Mayor returns. For the first time, some members of the band (I can't say who) begin to intimate that perhaps it would have been better if he had never returned. 1995: The Mayor is stolen again, this time by the notorious Famille du Caniveaux. Spring, 1995: Lurid pictures surface of the Mayor in the embrace of a strange mystery woman. Though some say McCheese was drugged, others face the sober realization that perhaps the Mayor's morals leave something to be desired. Summer, 1995: After the band meets the terms of the Mayor's ransom (which include "Proof of Dick Hippy" and 500 lbs. of feed corn), he returns in Seattle amidst a wild carnival and the painful flinging of corn. Summer, 1996: As the band winds down backstage at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, the Mayor leaves once again, this time on an incredible journey which takes him (allegedly) on a trip down ther Colorado river). December, 1996: As quickly as he departed, the Mayor returns to Bridgette and the band. This time, no one notices he is back. Spring, 1997: In an incident that reeks of intrigue, the Mayor again disappears, this time into the back seat of Sally Van Meter's car. Sally is duped herself, however, when the Mayor mysteriously disappears from *her* house as well. June, 1997: The Mayor mysteriously shows up on Planet Bluegrass owner Craig Ferguson's bed. Arrangements are made to transport the Mayor to Telluride, where he makes a grand entrance during Leftover Salmon's set on Friday night. All seems well, at last. Some of my memories: Labor Day weekend '92 - Vince & Kim's wedding - Camp Howdy in the meadow, and rolling the Mayor down the hill(he was real lazy, though, he didn't want to come back up to the party by himself!); At the Fox - carrying the Mayor in on our shoulders, complete with secret service-type goons and paparazzi - getting McCheese to the stage and a mike where he gave a speech - a little later was accosted by an admirer and then tossed around like a beach ball. He was upset over this so then had a close encounter with someone's cranial area. Person disagreed & threatened the Fox, the Band, Boulder, et al with the L-word. Kim had to try to calm the guy down outside when one of Boulder's finest came along & asked what was up and Kim said "He said he got hit on the head by a cheeseburger, while pointing at her little cheeseburger pin she wore. The Law said "Oh, I see.", and went on his way. The first "kidnaping" - the Mayor was simply helping folks find the way to Vince & Kim's for her birthday party, and ended up in a car with a bunch of Nederland High School girls. After a notice in the local paper he came home a few days later. I thought I saw a little smile on his face.... Boy HOWDY I'm all choked up now. Sorry for the bandwidth but I needed to reminisce. Basically, Leftover had originally been booked to play Brick City, but Brick City forgot that it was greek week and had to have something this Thursday night in addition. Originally, the plan was to screw Leftover by having them play outside for only an hour and opening for two local bands or something. Then, the fratheads over there came to their senses, and it was announced in this morning's alligator (uf paper) that Leftover will be playing INSIDE from 11-2. So, come on out! It's gonna be crowded from the frat party outside, but maybe they'll all get too drunk and leave...
