Records) Mar. 1, 1998 - da Flower Punk The human voice is the most common, most mundane, most taken for granted -- most *misused* and *abused* -- musical instrument in the world. When this instrument is used to its fullest potential, however, it is perhaps the most expressive, versatile, emotive and infinitely unique musical instrument there is. What brings all this up is a *brilliant* new CD by the Bay Area's "world jazz a capella" collective SoVoSo, "Truth & Other Stories." While this name may be new to you, if you have ever seen or heard Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra, you are already familiar with some of the vocalists in SoVoSo. Rhiannon, Joey Blake & David Worm, one half of SoVoSo, have recently toured and recorded with McFerrin's project (which may be one of the few groups to ever really take the idea of improvisation to its very fullest sense). Rhiannon, you may also know from the 1980s jazz group Alive!, which also tried to expand the limits of the possible while at the same time maintaining deep roots in and respect for tradition. Sunshine Garcia, Melanie Rath and Nicholas Bearde make up the rest of this group. All six have spectacular voices, and combined the whole is consistently more than just the sum of the parts. Some of these songs are tales, some are meditations and others still are affirmations. Most cuts are some combination of all these things (and more) simultaneously. Which is to say that SoVoSo is not like any a cappella group you have ever heard before. Each member of SoVoSo is featured at various moments on this release, and each shines in their own special ways. Outstanding tracks include David Worm's "Be Of Love," a rhythmic, moving sermon on the value of relationships, be they between lovers, family members, friends, and/or with the spirit. Joey Blake's "Thank You For The Dream" puts a decisive end to any debate that may linger about whether dance music like Sly Stone's ever played a role in the struggles for racial equality and justice. Rhiannon's "In My Prime" may well be one of the deepest, most powerful, beautiful -- and yes, sexiest -- poetic representations of a woman reflecting upon life after the child-bearing years yet available. The completely improvised and wordless "For The Forest," which is "dedicated to the preservation of the Headwaters Forest in Northern California," is also *stunning*. This track is truly evocative of the quiet complexities of an ancient redwood grove. Anyone who has ever watched, listened, and felt the continent breathing knows that such a statement is not to be made lightly. Toward the middle of this piece the mood becomes somber, elegiac. This may be a reminder of the clear and present dangers facing these trees, and therefore, all of us. Thankfully many will find inspiration for renewed efforts on the behalf of the old growth from works of art like this one. As wonderful as these tracks are, there are two tracks on this disc that do not seem quite as strong as the others, at least on the first few listens. On the other hand, even these cuts have a lot of interesting ideas at work in them. I suspect these songs may well grow on me over time, even if (or perhaps because) they are not as `immediately accessible' as some of the others. If you appreciate the voice as an instrument -- both for making abstract sounds and for saying things that really mean something -- check this disc out. SoVoSo truly lives up to the many wonderful promises inherent in the phrase "world jazz a cappella." __________________________flowerpunkprods________________________ For more information on SoVoSo, call (510) 464-4653, or write P.O. I'm looking for the setlist for the 2/20/98 show at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. I'm a new fan (a big fan after that show) and this was my first real time seeing LoS. I wandered up on their set at the Midtown Music Festival in '94, but only got to see a couple of songs and had terrible seats. Also, if anyone has tapes of 2/20/98 and would be willing to do a B&P offer for a newbie, I would be most appreciative. Or if anyone has another tape they think would be a good 1st show, let me know. One other thing...Is Los headlining in Birmingham or are they opening for someone? the BJCC is a big place (similiar to what the Omni was like). The BJCC web page doesn't list anything. In the U.S., we have lost over 500 plants and animals since the signing of the Declaration of Independence; 250 of these species have disappeared in the last 15 years. This massive loss of life threatens our own existence, by depriving us of potential cures to deadly diseases and decimating local economies. For example, in the Pacific Northwest, the fishing industry has lost approxmiately $1 billion in the last ten years due to the decline in salmon. The U.S. Congress is now considering two radically different bills to reauthorize the Endangered Species Act. Kempthorne's Extinction bill (S.1180) rolls back 25 years of conservation efforts, sacrificing protections for endangered species to benefit industry. Miller(H.R. 2351) strikes a reasonable compromise, balancing wildlife needs with landowners, while working for the recovery of species. Congress could vote on these bills as early as the end of February,1998. Since 1973, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) has halted the potential extinction of dozens of animals, including the bald eagle, the gray wolf and the California sea otter. Senator Kempthorne's (R-ID) and Chafee (R-RI) are pushing forward a bill, S.1180, that protects the interests of industry at the expense of endangered species. At the same time, Rep. Miller (D-CA) has introduced a moderate bill, H.R. 2351, that strikes a balance between wildlife and landowners without sacrificing protection and recovery for endangered species. Please vote against S.1180 and support H.R. 2351. * SIGNED * 1) Christopher Chatto, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 2) Chris Mullin, Quincy, MA 02169 3) Elizabeth Hitchcock, Washington DC 20003 4) Richard Trilsch, Washington, DC 20003 5) Adam Ruben, Boston, MA 02111 6) Mark Ferrulo, Tallahassee, Fl 32303 7) Sara Schley, Wendell, MA 01379 8) Frank Dixon, Centerville, MA 02632 9) Steve Goldfinger, San Rafael, CA 94903 10)Marty Chapman,Ventura, CA.93001 11)Nathan Petz, Los Altos Hills, CA 94022 12) An(toinette) Jahnke, San Francisco, CA 94131 13)Joe Eucolono, Waukegan, IL 60085 14) Susie Glock Scotia New York 12302 15) Rebecca Glock Scotia New York 12302 16) Scott Paulson S.Royalton , VT 05068 17) Shajen Lichtenstein S.
