Or it's something like that. Damn, I found a reason to go and watch that again (there's a scene with Christy Moore playing a bit of Fairytale of New York, acctually, there's three bits with Christy singing [and one with Christy singing w/ Planxty] and they all rock). And, for those who haven't heard a the Pogues, a little discription. The most common description I've heard is a mixture of the Chieftans and the Sex Pistols. But, the Sex Pistols were never that talented or that clever. I'd say more along the line of the Clash (and since Joe Strummer produced their last Island album and was Shane's replacement for the first tour after he quit, it makes sense). Their latter Island albums started pulling in a few other influences as well. The following is from the liner notes to Essential (a greatest hits collection): "...Originally known as Pogue Mahone--Gaelic for 'kiss my ass,' the pogues released their first single in 1984. Mixing traditional Irish and English folk songs with punk aesthetic, the Pogues evolved into a unique and exciting entity...The Pogues' next recording included the Motown-influenced 'Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,' as well as the raucous cover of the Rolling Stones' 'Honky Tonk Women.' Peace and Love found the band tackling even more diverse styles. Their growing ambition is evident on the calypso-influenced 'Blue Heaven' and the sublime 'Lorelei'...On the surface it might not seem to make a lot of sense to marry the music of the Sex Pistols and the Chieftians, but all the sense you need (and all the nonsense, too) is right here in these songs. And if you scrpae the surface, may be you'll find an essential similarity of attitude in punk and traditional Irish folk music, an attitude that means the same no matter what the language: Pogue Mahone." I remember watching an old episode of SNL with some people and the Pogues where the guest band. My friend was talking about Shane's teeth (he's got some of the worst looking teeth in the world, green and all completly crooked). All I could say was, "I like that." The rest is what you might call history. ;) matt ------ =_NextPart_000_01BD4DD9.41606400 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: matthew sweeney To: "jeff.stampes@xilinx.com" Cc: "leftover@lists.colorado.edu" , "msween1@gl.umbc.edu" Subject: Re: Got any ideas??? So, everyone feel free to invite everyone ;) It'l be interesting to see how many people acctually show up. And hey, I got a new thread for everyone. How about posting some of those tried and true festival dishes. I'm the merchandise manager for the local festivals I hit and that's about all the festivals I hit so I wake up and go to work and go to bed (course while up I meet AMAZING people like Holly Wooten, the merch woman for Merle Saunders, Joe Gallant, and all kinds of other cool as shit people [including the merch guy for Fiji Mariners who is a dead ringer for Drew] amoung all the other beautiful people I meet, so it's deffinetly a cool job). So I don't get a chance to test out any kind of dishes, so what kind of recipes do all you folks have? matt ------ =_NextPart_000_01BD4DD9.41606400 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: Jonas Wilder Beals To: "BrianJ102@aol.com" Cc: "leftover@lists.colorado.edu" Subject: Re: Tony Furtado (no LoS) Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 22:37:18 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit On Wed, 4 Mar 1998 17:45:09 EST Brian J102 wrote: > Okay, decision time. He's one of the best banjo players in the world. You wouldn't want to miss one of the best banjo players in the world, now, would you? He puts on a very fine show, mellow and full of banjo pickin' goodness, and some guitar. There's blues, bluegrass, old-timey music... Tony plays banjo and various slide guitars. When I saw him last spring in Burlington, he had bassist Billy Rich, guitarist Scott Nygaard and percussionist Kester Smith with him... I'd say Tony's a must-see! He seems to be cool with taping, too, if you're willing to send him a copy. His rippin' jams and his often soulful (although sporatic) lyrics create a musical event which will keep you smiling for a while... I have seen Tony play several times both with his band (who are an excellent bunch of musicians although I don't know their names) and with SCI and I definately look forward to my next encounter with Tony Furtado. I saw the Tony Furtado Band on 22 Feb and dance my little heart out. That is really how I gauge most shows. How much do I dance? and Tony rates up top. So here's what I say, Brian. GO SEE TONY FURTADO!! If you are dissappointed (Brian only) email me privately and I'll send you a tape of your choice. Sorry for the bandwidth with little critical review and no LoS content. I will do a B+P offer of my all time favorite Salmon tape 3-11-95 @ the Zephyr in SLC, UT to the first 3 who respond. I don't have the setlist here, but I know the second set opens with Singin' the Blues>Working on the Building>Lovelight> ? > Singin' the Blues! Peace and Pasta NFA, Stacey PS. This is my first post, I hope it is appropriate. Let me know privately if you believe it is not.
