Birchmere >ain't to fond of dancing. Yep, Matt's right. Leftover Salmon DID play the Birchmere once - back in April of '95. To say the least, it was NOT exactly what the place expected. There were little cards on EVERY table proclaiming, "No dancing permitted!" It was kinda neat, being in the "hallowed halls" (in name, at least -- the Birchmere has moved several times over the years) of DC-area bluegrass where all the local "greats" have played (Seldom Scene, Emmy Lou Harris, and many others). That was the only time I got to hear the waterphone and the rubber fish and Steve playing the reverb -- also the only time I met Bridgette. I'm sure I've told this story before, but during one number I headed out to the "gents" and found myself following right behind a lovely young lady headed in the same direction -- dancing her you-know-what off as she went. Perhaps thinking I was the anti-dancing police, she turned around and said, "This is the fifth time I've been tonight! They can't stop me from dancing when I'm walking!" Mark told me that Jack Boyle (president of Cellar Door Productions the owner of the Bayou) PROMISED him that they've finally spent some money on the Bayou (I'll believe it when I see it!). I know I mentioned that when we met Jack back in August, he was giving Mark and Vince and their manager all kinds of heck for playing the 930 instead of HIS club, so my wife and I gave him all kinds of "heck" BACK for letting the place get so run down -- told him about the ceiling falling on Jack at the soundboard, the water dripping off the ceiling, the danger of getting too close to the "facilities," and 20 years of spilled beer stuck to the floor (all the things you folks had been bitchin' about at the time). (What the heck, I could tell he was already quite "taken" with the band, so I figured it couldn't do any harm...) He then said HIS wife recently went there and came back and told him she was going to leave him if he didn't spend some mony on the place! Anyway, WE shall SEE! At least he remembered our conversation! When I think about it, though, running a club in this area has GOT to be a tough business. LoS is now drawing a pretty good crowd, but it wasn't always so (like March of '94, the first time they played the Bayou -- they opened for ARU, but we were about the only folks there for that LoS set). Others, like Phish, have done so also, but THEN they go and get too big for a place. It doesn't do the club much good when there's 300 to 800 people outside who can't get in (like Phoenix on the last LoS tour, the Vic and the Variety a year ago -- even the Bayou the last time LoS played there) or when the shows sell out three or four weeks in advance (which seems to be fairly regular now -- even in places they haven't done well before -- San Diego was sold out this time, but only had about 80 happy people the time before). At some point, the "big draws" end up having to play bigger venues and then the 700-1,000 capacity places are out of luck again -- 'til the next "big" one comes along. Seeing as how places like the Bayou seem to be "dark" most nights, I have to wonder how they make ends meet -- even with the mark up on "refreshments." Enough ramblin... Good morning all! - Bryant PS. Hey, Clancey, we must be neighbors! I've dreamed of LoS-at-the-Barns also. >Hey, The Barns at Wolftrap would be perfect! I live about 5 miles up the >road from there! I think LoS has played at Wolftrap Feline CTR before, and I >would love to see them there in June or July - don't want to freeze the >boys' fingers off outside in early May! Then I realized that it only holds about 350 folks (I suppose they could pack in more without seats). I think a LoS festival there would bring the house down, literally, but it would be a great venue otherwise. The Filene Center? NOW you're talking! THAT holds over 6,000! They played there with Ricky Scaggs in the summer of '96 -- just bfore R.O.A.M. Clearly they were the hit of the evening for a LOT of folks. Now, some may recall that we then predicted that in two years they'd be back there -- headlining their own show... I haven't given up hope! ------ =_NextPart_000_01BD4E78.1D2380F0 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: Taz To: Bryant Vann Cc: "leftover@lists.colorado.edu" Subject: Re: Some Tour Changes Date: Fri, 13 Mar 1998 08:52:57 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit WRT the Bayou: I have been there since the 'renovations'....not all that much is different - they took away a corner and put in a beer-only bar...they have added the back corner near the entrance (INSIDE) as the merch table....they keep the coat check open cuz it's now where they sell the microbrews....upstairs is exactly the same except that the bathrooms don't permeate that stench as much as they used to.....
