If such a movement has caught hold of the imagination of the masses, they will seek a vent in song for the aspirations, fears, and hopes, the loves and hatreds engendered by the struggle. Until the movement is marked by the joyous, defiant singing of revolutionary songs it lacks one of the most distictive marks of a popular revolutionary movement: it is the dogma of the few and not the faith of the multitude." - James Connally, 1907 (Quoted on the wall of the Starry Plough, Berkeley, Ca.) Irish eyes are smiling when there's peace in Ireland, Tim tlynch@socrates.berkeley.edu "If I can't dance I'm not coming to your revolution." - Emma Goldman ----__ListProc__NextPart____LEFTOVER__digest_891 Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 11:39:51 -0800 (PST) From: John LaBonte To: Timothy Lynch Cc: LoSers , adam doris Subject: Re: St. P(h)attie's Day Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Hey All, Timothy's quote started me thinking of something I read recently. See Milan Kundera's book "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" for his definition of "kitsch"...basically kitsch, as he puts it, is the denial and blindness to the real shit that goes on behind the scenes of any revolution. It is also about making propoganda easier to fall into by giving it a pretty face and creating a grand vision of myths and dreams to chase after. Every country, party, religion, and movement does this. Now see the rise of communism, nazi holocaust, westward expansion of the US, star-spangled banner, american dream, capitolism...its an endless list! Its all about believing in myth and ignoring the real shit of what happens, kitsch. Poetry, song, dance, writing, and the light at the end of the tunnel are all vehicles used in the perpetuation of myth. I'm not saying its bad, I'm saying think with your heart AND your brain and fight for individualism and freedom and question everything before believing. Wo! Sorry for that speal, it had to be done!
