It is also about making propoganda easier to fall into by giving it a pretty face and creating a grand vision of myths and dreams to chase after. Every country, party, religion, and movement does this. Now see the rise of communism, nazi holocaust, westward expansion of the US, star-spangled banner, american dream, capitolism...its an endless list! Its all about believing in myth and ignoring the real shit of what happens, kitsch. Poetry, song, dance, writing, and the light at the end of the tunnel are all vehicles used in the perpetuation of myth. I'm not saying its bad, I'm saying think with your heart AND your brain and fight for individualism and freedom and question everything before believing. I see what your saying and I agree to an extent. The only thing patriotism will do is get you killed. However there are songs of revolution that are not just a tool for a party/country/ or religious movement. Bob Marley had radically revolutionary songs that really related the struggle for freedom but didn't carry any real political message-they are songs of revolution for *all* people. This Land is Our Land is a patriotic song, but has totally different connotations from the Star Spangled Banner. Poetry, song, dance, writing, etc. *can* all be vehicles used in the perpetuation of 'myth'- they can also be pure heartfelt expressions from the artist's soul that relate the beauty of the everyday struggles of life (peace, freedom, happiness, etc.) Happy St. Patty's Day everyone, Pray for peace, Bill Marchin' down O'Connell Street with the Starry Plough on high There goes the Citizen Army with their fists raised in the sky Leading them is a mighty man with a mad rage in his eye "My name is James Connolly - I didn't come here to die But to fight for the rights of the working man And the small farmer too Protect the proletariat from the bosses and their screws- (Black 47) (long off-topic post penance first 7ish get 1/30/98 Santa Cruz SBD2 for b&p) ----__ListProc__NextPart____LEFTOVER__digest_892 Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 19:04:48 PST From: "Justin Fox" To: leftover@lists.colorado.edu Subject: ISO: 2-14-98 Tree's Dallas, Tx Message-ID: <19980318030448.14911.qmail@hotmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain Hey All I was wonderin if anyone out there has a copy of the 2-14-98 Trees sho in Dallas, have plenty to offer in return or ill do b&p, but ould prefer to trade. http://www.angelfire.com/tx/worldopanic/index.html Thanks Justin ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ----__ListProc__NextPart____LEFTOVER__digest_892 Date: Tue, 17 Mar 1998 22:50:12 -0600 From: Zac Williams To: leftover@lists.colorado.edu Subject: 9-12-96 Offer! So my spring break this week was made up of about 9 shows in a row, and one i was looking most forward to was last night's St Patty's show at the Ten Mile Room in Breck. Well it just wasn't to be. First of all, i had met a girl skiing up there a week before and asked her if she wanted to go to the show. She said sure. Cool! But then the last few days i was unable to get a hold of her. Well, looks like she was blowing me off. So i order two tickets just in case, knowing i could probably sell the extra at the show. But when i order i find out that the show had been moved from the Ten Mile Room to me Maggy at the base of Peak 9! Wonder why? So whatever. I get home from work, pack my taping gear and such, scarf a sandwich down, and head out. Now i live in Denver and Breck is a bit over an hour away. I figured it would be worth drive though. I've done worse. Well, it's raining out. Not too bad. So i hop onto the highway and start heading west. Rain gets harder. I start thinking to myself if it's worth it. Just past Red Rocks it starts turning into a real nasty, wet snow and i hydroplane a couple times. That's it! Time to go home! So i turn around. Damn. Picked up a couple movies to watch but one had just terrible sound and the other was pretty boring! So that was my St. Patty's Day! At least i had a Guinness at lunch! The rest of the weekend should cheer me up, Peter Rowan tonight, then Leftover Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I'll try to post reviews for each show. If anyone's going to any of these, let me know and perhaps we could meet up! Chow! I'm very exited about the May 23rd date at Angel's Camp, CA BUT where is that?! I live in San Diego and haven't heard of it so I assume its in northern Cal somewhere. How awesome would that be if The Other Ones and JGB played too! Also, does anybody know when tickets go on sale? Any info welcomed! Yes, these songs might be written to ensight certain feelings, but these songs live on. They take new meanings and, in many siutations, become a point of pride. They remind the future generations of what has come before them so that they can learn. It also gives them a sense of pride that there are things worth fighting for. I know I can't listen to songs like "God Save Ireland," "Rifles of the IRA," or "A Row In The Town" with out my heart welling up with pride. It tells the Irish of today that they faced some of the best fighting men the Brits had to offer and they turned them back. The subject can go both ways though. Songs like "There Were Roses" bring about the new "myth" that of piece and brotherhood. In essence the purpose of these songs the reasons they were made. The fact they they were made to try to sway opinions. Is the same. Are the opions deffirent? Like an apple is different from an orange. matt american in flesh, irish in spirit. ----__ListProc__NextPart____LEFTOVER__digest_892 Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 16:32:57 -0500 (EST) From: matthew sweeney To: leftover@lists.colorado.edu (LoSers) Subject: the photo Message-ID: <199803182132.QAA09594@indy24.gl.umbc.edu> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Ok, To revive Heather's old thread. My interpretation of the band photo. Tye - tries to fulfill his life long dream as a referee by making calls while whatching the game on the TV (of camera) Vince - Practicing the ancient martial art of the Salmon Mark - Giving someone a stern talking to. Or he's trying to make his second point. Jeff - simple, he's raising his hand to block the sun from his eyes. Drew - hand gestures while he's teling someone something. Though, with out his lips moving. Or they are simply talking at once using secret hand gestures (sorry, I'm reading Dune Messiah right now, those who've read it (or any of the Dune Chronicels) know what I'm talking about. Great books if you haven't read them). matt ----__ListProc__NextPart____LEFTOVER__digest_892 Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 15:16:34 -0700 (MST) From: Brad To: leftover@lists.colorado.edu Subject: Bela/Salmon combo...
