Well after my failed Breck trip, my spirits have been restored by two excellent shows, and the anticipation of one more tonight! And they have been ripping it up! Wow! First night was at the Aggie Theater in Ft. Collins, a relatively new place, somewhat narrow and long but still excellent sound. It had been since 11/6 since i saw the guys, too damn long in my book! It didn't even hit me that i was gonna see them until i got in and wound my way right up to the stage on Drew's side where we stayed for the entire show! Then i got that tingling all over my body, the excitement of what you know is going to be a stellar show! And the guys didn't disappoint! Here's the setlist: Carnival 9 Pound Hammer Stop Toy Heart Highway Song Beethoven's 5th Fastest Song Cactus Flower Bosco Stomp Funky Mtn Fogdown Blues in a Bottle Hot Corn Cold Corn Gold Hill Line Four in the Morning River's Risin' Flying Cloud Cotillion Jokester Dangerous Lonesome Road O'Reilly's Dead Mama Boulet Gasoline--> Rocky Mtn Way--> Gasoline Better E: 420 Polka Rise Up Excellent show! They never really stretched it out that much, except Funky Mtn where the slow intro was longer than ever! Beethoven's 5th (anyone know a more appropriate name?) was a first for me and i loved it! Very high energy! The reason i have Fastest and Cactus separated is because they did the little rift, then they went into a slow, reggae version of Cactus. Kinda cool! Stop and Dangerous were two tunes that i had never heard before but were very fun. Anyone know if they're new originals? Of course the 420 Polka was a highlight with excellent solos by everyone. Then the Rise Up was long! Apt. kept on changing the beat all over the place, jamming with Tye for a long while after the other guys left the stage. Overall an excellent show, but it didn't totally blow my mind. Last night did. And the personal highlight for me last night was that they quoted three, count them three, different Zappa tunes! Yowza! Here's the list: Sitting on Top Zydeco Gold Hill Line Georgia Lou--> Junky Partner--> Georgia Lou Smoke on the Water Breakin' Through Flop-Eared Mule Zombie Jamboree Spirit Voodoo Queen Marie--> Wheel Hoss Stop Who Stole My Monkey * Bosco Stomp Funky Mtn Fogdown Euphoria Ain't Gonna Work ** Monkey Man--> Hot Corn Cold Corn Blue ?--> Please Do Not Go--> Dyer Maker--> Joe's Garage Montana--> Blue ?--> Beverly Hillbillies--> Buffalo Soldier--> ?? Midnight Blues Redneck Friends Little Maggie # Cheese Frog E: Salty Dog--> # Rise Up # w/ Sally Van Meter for the entire show! * w/ the monkey doing flips and jumps with a couple bungie cords! ** w/ Will Lee from Magraw Gap in the Monkey outfit on banjo! I never thought monkeys were smart enough to play the banjo!! # w/ Danny Nicely and Buddy from Magraw Gap This was one hilarious show!! Smoke on the Water was pretty damn heavy! It's amazing that a band that can play so hard and heavy a rock tune like that can also play the sweetest bluegrass! Voodoo Queen was a slow reggae version, until Vince kicked it up to it's normal crazy tempo! Beautifully smooth transition into one of my favorite Monroe tunes, Wheel Hoss! Stop actually stopped too early, before Drew got to solo. Realizing this Apt. jumped right back into the tune for its proper ending. The energy level was pretty far into the red zone for both the band and the audience. But the second set is where all the fun happened! They started out by hooking the monkey up to two bungie cords which allowed him to bounce 15 feet into the air! He did a flip or two. A couple times i thought he was gonna land right on our heads! Hilarious sight! Whisperin' Waters was on the setlist, but unfortunately they broke out Funky Mtn again. I love Funky Mtn but i was really looking forward to a Whisperin. Oh well, there's always tonight! Then towards the end of Ain't Gonna Work, out comes the monkey again! He walks over to Mark, bullies him a bit, and then takes the banjo from him. Much to everyone's delight, he starts playing a furious solo that surprised everyone! Sure has nimble fingers for being a monkey! Towards the end of the song Mark was fretting the banjo with his left hand and the monkey was plucking with his right! Pretty amazing! As the monkey walks off the stage, Vince starts up this little beat, teasing George of the Jungle before singing "Girl, you thought he was man, but he was a Monkey Man!" a spin-off of Zappa's Muffin Man! That lead into an outrageous Corn, with everyone taking solos including Tye! That guy needs to step out more often. And then comes a huge medley that is almost comparable to the Bob Marley medley of 2/6/97. All of it was based on the simple G-Em-C-D chord progression. It got to the point where we were waiting to see how many different song Vince could pull out of his hat that fit the chord progression! When he did Zappa's Joe's Garage and Montana i nearly flipped! Redneck Friends was a Sally Van Meter choice. I tell ya, she needs to be made a permanent member! She fits in so nicely with the boys. Then after a sweet Little Maggie with the Gap boys, Apt. talked them into doing a song i had been yelling for the past two nights, Cheese Frog! Ya gotta love Col. Bruce Hampton! But anyway! They finished things off with a bouncy Salty Dog, that led to a chaotic jam with everyone grabbing a beer bottle and playing slide, before moving into a slow Rise Up. Again the Apt. changed the beat all over the place making for a real interesting version of a song that i'm not always thrilled about. A stellar night overall! Can't wait for tonight! Also i got to meet and talk with Apt. Q258 afterwards. Looks like they're having another Zambiland Orchestra at the Fox on June 15th, the day before the Red Rocks gig. Should be fun! I won't have to miss this one like i did last year. Anyway, if you made it this far, thanks for reading! I'll post again tomorrow. Chow!
