FRANCISCO de Moraes ALVES was born (19/08/1898) in the city of Rio de Janeiro and had the free and happy childhood of the "carioca" boys from the begining of the century , playing soccer with a socket ball , skipping classes and polishing shoes.He lived in Saude , Estacio de Sa and Vila Isabel.His parents were both portuguese.The father had a bar.
From his sister Nair he won the guitar and the first lessons.He played it very well.In Parlophon he would record many albuns with the nickname of "Chico Viola".Since early he was atracted by music.In the carnival society competition he cheered for th "Democraticos".When a teenager he used to listen , in theaters Carlos Gomes and Recreio , to the great names of brazilian singing.Vicente Celestino was his idol. 
He worked in two hat factories and as taxi driver.His carrer began in 1918 , at Circus Spinelli , in Meier.After that there were other companies.In 1920 he records two albuns in Popular , an inexpressive record company, leaded by the composer Sinho.The march "O Pe de Anjo" was first recorded by him.He would only go back to recording sessions in 1923 , at Odeon, with another two albuns, ignored until now.He continued to work at musicals in the search of a late succes. In 1927 he returns to Odeon and records a bunch of albuns still with the mechanical process of singing with the most powerful voice possible into a cone.A few months later , appears in Brazil the electric process , with microphone and wires ,and Francisco Alves quickly conquers the position of greatest national singer. 
He was professional to the extreme .He took care of his repertoire , discovered new composers , and still , helped new singers.In the Studios he was exiguous with the musicians and liked to select and rehearse personally the components of the choir.Choirs were indeed one of his passions , as cars and horse race , as a horse owner.
