The giant creatures that attack the Earth are known as the Angels. Not much is known about the origin or goal of these mysterious lifeforms, but fortunately NERV has the technology to combat them. The characteristic of an Angel that makes it so invulnerable to conventional attack is its ability to raise a defensive forcefield known as an AT Field. Apart from this power, each Angel has its own arsenal of individualized "weaponry," around which Misato and the NERV team must build careful strategies.

Designation: The Third Angel
Arsenal: Cruciform Explosive Blast, Forearm Piston, Self-destruction,
AT Field
Description: The Third Angel came to Japan by sea and was greeted by the UN's military defense force. The Angel worked its way toward Tokyo-3, leaving a trail of destruction in its path. Ikari Shinji was dispatched in EVA-01 to combat Sachiel. The initial bout between Eva and Angel was clearly a victory for Sachiel. However, after taking extensive damage, EVA-01 went berserk and ripped apart the Angel. The battle ended when Sachiel self-destructed, barely managing to scratch the Evangelion.
Name: Shamshel
Designation: The Fourth Angel
Arsenal: Laser Whips, Hovering Ability, AT Field
Description: The Fourth Angel was also greeted by a military defense force, which again had no effect. Ikari Shinji was again dispatched in EVA-01 to combat the Angel. EVA-01 took some minor damage from the laser whips, and its power cord was cut by Shamshel. With a limited amount of activation time remaining, Shinji raced toward Shamshel and pierced the Angel's core with EVA-01's progressive knife. The Angel met its end just as EVA-01 ran out of power. Apart form its core, the Angel provided an intact specimen for NERV's research.
