The pilots of the Evangelions are referred to as the Children, and numbered in the order that they are aquired by NERV. All of the pilots were born exactly nine months after the Second Impact--the meteor blast that wiped out nearly half of the human race. Here, the Children are listed in order of appearance...
Name: Ikari Shinji
Age: 14
Designation: The Third Child
Evangelion: Unit-01
Description: Ikari Shinji is our story's hero and main character. Summoned by his father to NERV headquarters, Shinji is expected to pilot Evangelion Unit-01 against an attacking Angel. Shinji is guilted into the position and doesn't take easily to his new role as mankind's savior. He doesn't take kindly to his father's uncaring attitude, either.
Name: Ayanami Rei
Age: 14
Designation: The First Child
Evangelion: Unit-00
Description: Rei is a quiet, extremely introverted girl who follows her Commander's directions unquestioningly. She has already been employed by NERV as a pilot at the time Shinji arrives. From square one, it appears that there is much more to Rei than Shinji is told.
Name: Soryu Asuka Langley
Age: 14
Designation: The Second Child
Evangelion: Unit-02
Description: Asuka is the most outgoing of our pilots. With an explosive attitude to match her flaming red hair, plug-suit, and Evangelion, Asuka serves to counterbalance the withdrawn attitudes of the First and Third Children. Asuka is half Japanese and half German and has spent most of her life in Germany, training as a pilot under Rioji Kaji.
Our pilots aren't the only children who play an important role in Evangelion. Their classmates are also highly developed characters who add greatly to the storyline and serve to flesh out the main characters...
Name: Aida Kensuke
Age: 14
Occupation: Student
Description: Kensuke is the newsman of the class. He keeps his video camera with him at all times and goes to great lengths to capture the Evangelion action on tape. He knows his history and has a particular fascination with military vehicles and warfare. He's one of the first people to show Shinji some real human compassion. He also winds up becoming one of the "three stooges"--Asuka's nickname for Kensuke, Toji, and Shinji.
Name: Horaki Hikari
Age: 14
Occupation: Student; Class Representative
Description: Hikari, as class rep, is charged with keeping order in the classroom. She's always getting on Toji's case in terms of classroom behavior, but she doesn't honestly have anything against the three stooges. Hikari is the first to befriend Asuka and offers continued support for her foreign-raised companion.
Name: Suzuhara Toji
Age: 14
Occupation: Student
Description: Toji tries to keep a tough-guy exterior, but he's got a big heart underneath. His little sister is injured during Shinji's first battle against an Angel, and Toji takes it upon himself to avenge his sibling by beating up our hero. Things work out in the end, however, and Toji becomes one of Shinji's closest friends.
