NERV is the mysterious agency behind the Evangelions. Based underground in Tokyo-3, NERV is the only group with the capability to combat the Angels. The agency has branches in various regions of the world, including the U.S. and Germany, but most of the action seems to take place at home in Japan. Following is a list of important characters who work for NERV...
Name: Professor Ikari Gendo
Position: Commander-in-Chief
Description: Gendo is not only the head of NERV, but also the father of Ikari Shinji--our hero and main character. Gendo abandoned Shinji when the boy was only four years old, leaving the role of guardian to Shinji's teacher. At the opening of Evangelion, Gendo has summoned his son to NERV headquarters. For the first time in three years, Shinji and Gendo are brought face to face. Needless to say, the situation is uneasy at best.
Name: Professor Fuyuzuki Kozou
Position: Vice-Commander
Description: Fuyuzuki is Gendo's right-hand man. While the Vice-Commander does not appear to be so cold-hearted as his superior, it is obvious that Gendo places quite a bit of trust in Fuyuzuki. Outside of his dealings with the Commander, Professor Fuyuzuki can be quite personable.
Name: Doctor Akagi Ritsuko
Position: Head Researcher/Analyst
Description: Always cool and in control, Ritsuko manages the many technicians at NERV and oversees the various experiments and tests run by the agency. She is also a long-time friend of Katsuragi Misato, Director of Operations.
Name: Katsuragi Misato
Position: Director of Operations
Description: Misato works directly with the pilots of the Evangelions, directing each mission from her station at NERV headquarters. A strategic genious, Misato manages to find the advantage in any battle with an Angel. Just the opposite of Ritsuko, Misato is as outgoing and volatile as they come--just the kind of personality needed to counterbalance the coldly scientific mindset at NERV.
Name: Ibuki Maya
Position: Assistant Analyst
Description: Maya is one of the many technicians working under Ritsuko's watchful eye. Maya studies directly under Ristuko and idolizes her teacher. She is known to act as a voice of morality when her scientific superiors become too emotionless.
Name: Rioji Kaji
Position: Director of Operations, Third Branch (Germany)
Description: The dashing Rioji Kaji was Misato's lover during college. Things went awry somewhere along the lines, and the two went their separate ways. Now Kaji is Director of Operations for NERV's Third Branch in Germany. He's worked with Asuka throughout her training as a pilot. We meet him just as he delivers the Second Child (Asuka) unto Misato's authority.
Name: Hyuga Makoto (left) and Aoba Shigeru (right)
Position: Operational Technicians
Descriptions: Hyuga and Aoba are upper level technicians that work under Misato and Ritsuko during Evangelion operations and tests.
