HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT DOMAIN NAME?
1. First of all, just what the heck is a Domain Name?
It's the NAME of your Web site. Kind of like a GENERAL street
address ("That's the JONES residence"). For instance,
the Domain Name of Yahoo is http://www.yahoo.com
(The "http://www" almost always precedes the Domain
Name.) Now your Web Site can be made up of several pages. Each
page has a different address. Remember, your Domain Name is a
GENERAL address. The individual pages are SPECIFIC addresses
("That's the JONES residence, and Corey's room is right up
there to the left"). So the rule is: you only need ONE
Domain Name, even though you may have a thousand pages on your
Site. Now Domain Names can end in different extensions, such as:
com, net, org, gov and others
But at this point, it's best for you to stick with
".com" as the extension for YOUR Domain Name, because
".com" is what people identify with most.
2. How do you choose a Domain Name?
Well, the most important thing to consider is that the
Name ties into your business. For
instance, if you sell antiques, then "antiques.com"
would be a pretty good Domain Name.
"goofyguy.com" would not.
Next, try to keep it short and sweet, or at least rhythmic if
possible. This helps people to remember it better. For instance,
"abc.com" is better than
"americanbroadcastingcompany.com".
And if you run a music store and the name
"musicstore.com" is already taken, consider something
like "doremi.com"
See? It's not that difficult. So here's the NEXT STEP.
Make out a list of about 20 Domain Names following the advice
above. Why so many? Because most, if not all of them, are
probably already taken.
3.How do you know if the Domain Name you want is still available?
Simple. Just go to my Domain Name Search Engine where
you type in your chosen Domain Name, then hit your Enter key.
It's at:
http://free-email.virtualave.net
Now let's say you found a Domain Name that's still available.
GREAT! So what happens next? The Domain Name MUST be REGISTERED
Immediately before someone else grabs it. And it's got to be
registered oh so FAST! Otherwise you're back to square
4. How do you register it?
The fastest and easiest way is to have your Web site Host do it for you. So just keep reading.
YOUR WEB
SITE HOST- Some Important Issues
1. Your Web site is made up of pictures and text and sound, which
is all condensed into files. Now you can store all these files on
your own computer and have your entire Web site there but,
problem is, no one outside of you will have access to your site.
And what good is that!
Enter the Web Site Host. The Web Site Host is the place where Web
Sites reside. For a monthly fee, they'll take your Web Site files
and put them on their own computers (servers) to make them
available to the public (anyone who wants to visit your site).
"BUT IF MY FILES ARE MADE AVAILABLE TO ANYONE,
WHAT'S TO STOP SOMEONE FROM MESSING THEM UP?"
Relax. You're Web site files are made available to anyone to SEE,
but only YOU, or someone you authorize, can change them.
Now a good Web Site Hosting company has:
24 hour service
hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment,
back-up servers in case something goes wrong,
a tech support hotline, top-notch security,
good prices
Everything you possibly need to make sure your Web site is ALWAYS available to anyone that wants to see it.In other words, they monitor your site 24 hours each day so you won't have to.
Front Page Ready- Some Web Site Hosting companies can't handle certain files. For instance, if you or someone you've hired is Designing your Web Site using a very popular Web Site Design program from Microsoft called "FrontPage", realize that MANY Web Site hosts have trouble with this format. The problem isn't with "FrontPage". The problem is with the Web Site HOST. They need to modernize.
Downtime- Web Site HOSTS regularly do maintenance on their servers. Sometimes the servers go down for a short while. During this time, no one will be able to access your Web Site. This AIN'T good. Look for a Web Site HOST who has an UPTIME of at least 95%.
A further problem is that some HOSTING companies can't handle certain advanced Web scripts. For instance, if you wanted an Order Form on your Site where customers can pay via credit card right then and there, be aware that many HOSTING companies don't have the capabilities to handle this. Bummer for you if you find out too late.
And then there's Tech Support. If it's too few and far between or the Support is rude or you can't understand their "tech-talk", look elsewhere. What you need is 24 hour Support from friendly, knowledgeable folks who can talk to you in plain English. The best way to test this is to call BEFORE you sign up. Tell them you're thinking of signing up, but it's your first time and you need some hand-holding. See how they reply...
Finally, and this is very
important, make sure that you are REGISTERED as the OWNER
of the Domain Name. Some unscrupulous HOSTING companies
will go ahead and Register your name, but list themselves
as the Administrative and Billing Contact. In effect,
this prevents you from ever taking your Domain Name to
another HOSTING company, since they can now make the
claim that they own your Domain Name. The bottom line is
that you NEED a good Web Site Host if you want to put
your business up on the Web. There's just no other way
around it.
Wait a minute. I see someone in the back
of the room with their hand raised. Yes you. What's your
question?
"WHY SHOULD I PAY SOMEONE TO HOST MY WEB SITE WHEN THERE
ARE DOZENS OF PLACES ON THE WEB OFFERING 'FREE' WEB SITES?"
Good question, so let me supply a good answer. Let's say you use
one of these "FREE" Web sites. Angelfire is a good
example. If you set up your Web site on Angelfire, the first
thing a visitor to your site will see is a pop-up window
advertisement from a company you have nothing to do with. You
didn't seriously think that "FREE" came without a
hitch, did you?
Next, there will be other banner ads, unrelated to you, plastered
across your site. You have NO say in this matter. They're there
to stay. Get used to it. Also, the type and the amount of Web
site files they'll let you put up is extremely limited.
But the biggest drawback is in the Domain Name. They won't let
you use one. Instead of letting you use, for
instance, "myname.com", you're stuck with a long
and clunky name,
something like
"angelfire.com/il/business/opportunity/myname". Doesn't
look all that professional, does it? And when people see that
long Web address you've just proudly given them, they'll wonder
how successful you really are if you can't even afford your own
Domain Name.
I Would Like To personally recommend Astro
Space Do Visit Them. But check out Web Site
HOSTING companies on your own. Ask your friends or colleagues.
Remember, you want the BEST possible service at the lowest
possible price.
However, if you cannot afford
a Domain Name but would indeed like a shorter URL or the internet
address then click on the banner below.
