Backstreet Boys slugger scores big with sports and games

It's no secret that Backstreet Boys' Brian Littrell hasn't exactly had an easy time of it. When the 25-year-old singer was just five years old, he flipped his Big Wheel over and skinned a knee. But when the little guy had another accident two weeks later, in which he hit his head, his mom was quick to rush him to the hospital. It was then that doctors discovered that Brian had developed a staph infection from the previous fall. But that's wasnt all.

Doctors also discovered that Brian had been born with a heart murmur and a small hole in his heart, and now with the staph infection ravaging his little body, his life was actually in danger. Brian remembers, "The doctors told my mom and dad that if I did live I wouldn't be able to do anything.' Thankfully Brian survived, though his parents were understandably reluctant to let him be as active as he was before. Showing them he'd gotten his strength back, and with his doctors' permission, Brian slowly began to get back to the sports and games he had always loved.

More recently, when Brian went through two- and-a-half hours of open-heart surgery to once and for all repair the hole in his heart, there's no doubt he was nervous; but he made it through with flying colors. Once again, doctors permitted him to go back to his beloved sports and games. "If I really want to do something, I'll do it,' Brian says. "It's not about being a rebel, it's just about enjoying life."

For Brian, sports and games have not only enabled him to stay fit and healthy, they've provided great fun and lots of stress relief. Let's face it, when you're a major pop star and you want to make yourself available to your fans, a little b-ball every now and then can only help.
