Big Ones

I've listened to most of the AC/DC albums, and I have an extensive collection myself.

There's not one AC/DC album that's utter crap, all of them are good, some more than other. What I will try here, is to recommend some albums that struck me with the full force of Angus' and Malcolm's guitars, albums you can listen to every day and never get sick of.

Albums with Bon Scott:

"If You Want Blood": An album recorded live in 1978, this one was nothing short of an masterpiece, and could compete with the best the rock scene has to offer. The album consisted out of the best AC/DC had put together, up to 1978. The content also had a lot more kick than any of the gory activity featured on the cover. Songs like 'Rocker', 'Problem Child' and 'High Voltage', set the tone for another piece of AC/DC brilliance, whilst 'Let there be rock' and 'Riff Raff' kept the crowds cheering, shouting and clapping. This was also the first live album for Cliff Williams, bassist and the newest member in the band at the time. But, as Bon and co. had already realized, Cliff had become an invaluble part of the AC/DC outfit. This album had hit the world with the sheer might of rock n' roll, and will always remain one of the great live albums of all times.

"Highway To Hell": Released in 1979, there was a new type of savagery from the guitars of the brothers Young brought into this album, and background-type vocals that steered rock music into a totally different dimension. This album is probably the nearest a band will ever come to making an album sound like a full-blooded street fight. The album opens with 'Highway to Hell', one of the all-time classics. Then followed by 'Walk all over you', 'Touch too Much' and 'Shot down in flames', it leads up to probably one of the best hooligan songs ever recorded, 'If you want blood (you've got it)'. The album ends with 'Night Prowler', a song so sublime it's destined for the all-time hall of fame. At the end Bon signs off with the words "Shazbot. Nanoo, Nanoo". Tragically, that was the last time Bon would sign off for AC/DC, as he died early the following year. None the less, a great album, and probably Bon's best.

Albums with Brian Johnson:

"Back In Black": This is one of AC/DC's biggest albums of all times, not because it went multi-platinum, but because Malcolm himself thought that AC/DC were finished when Bon died. They recruited Brian and took a chance, and it paid off. Brian not only carried on where Bon had left off, he also made AC/DC more popular than ever. The album, released in 1980, must be one of the best rock albums ever recorded, and can sure as hell compete with the best up there, it could even be an equal to 'Highway To Hell'. Starting off with the spine-chilling 'Hells Bells', and following up with 'Shoot To Thrill', 'Back in Black' and 'Shake A Leg', this album was a winner from the start. Brian was at his best, and Malcolm and Angus were right up there with him. 'Back In Black' had set the scene for many great albums to come.

"Flick Of The Switch": This one had a bit of controversy surrounding it, because it was the last album Phil Rudd recorded with the band, before returning in 1995, to drum for AC/DC on the 'Ballbreaker' album. At the end of the recording sessions Phil was fired, the cause of his drug problems, and also some personal problems between Phil and Malcolm. The album on the other hand, had again been of the high standard we'd come to expect of AC/DC, and Brian could be compared to the grand master himself, Bon Scott. The album opens with 'Rising Power' and is followed by 'Landslide', 'Deep in the hole' and 'Brain shake'. This type of rock could be traced back to the days of Bon Scott and 'If You Want Blood'. One could sense the air of greatness surrounding Brian, you could hear it just by listening to 'Rising Power' and 'Deep in the hole'. Another great album.

I've just mentioned the four albums that I've enjoyed the most, but be sure to check out albums like 'High Voltage', 'Dirty Deeds', 'Blow Up Your Video', 'Razors Edge' and 'LIVE'. The 'Bonfire' box set is also a must. A great collection indeed.
