When they started on the content of the set, the band didn't have any unreleased songs of Bon, only demos recorded in studio before the real recordings. The big task in completing the set was to find the master tapes of old studio recordings and live shows. The band spent a lot of time listening to the recordings and selecting the songs where Bon were his old, flamboyant, screaming self.

At first the band didn't know what to call the set, and something like "The Best of AC/DC" or "AC/DC Rocks" just wouldn't do the trick. Then they remembered that Bon used to joke about when he was going to be famous one day. In Bon's own words: "When I'm a f..king big shot I'm going to call my solo album 'Bonfire'... ". So, 'Bonfire' it was. A very apt name for a tribute to a fallen warrior...
The set was completed in September 1997 and released on November 14, 1997 in Europe, and 4 days later in the United States of America. 'Bonfire' is made up of five CD's, including a live radio show recorded in 1977, one of the last live concerts with Bon recorded in 1979 (spanning two CD's), a collection of unreleased demos and live songs with Bon from '77 to '79, and the multi-platinum 'Back In Black'.
